B3 Draw closed hook review

will start by saying I was pretty excited about this release for a couple of reasons.
  • Price
  • The fact that was be an incredibly quiet release for hunting
I was excited about the price because I always feel like when I’m hunting with a handheld release I should have two.

I was also very interested in the searless design and hopefully near silent operation.

THE GOOD

I like a heavy button when hunting and B3 included and extra tension spring that takes care of that very nicely. A great texture that would help with purchase while hunting gloves. This release is very quiet.

THE BAD

When the hook is in the closed position it requires the insertion of a tool (small Allen wrench, screwdriver or whatever fits) to open the hook.

When I shoot an arrow the release hook returns to the closed position every time. Because of this I have to put the bow down and get a tool to open the hook. A less than ideal proposition if you shoot a lot or even a little. I tried shaking the release to get hook open, shot two different bows of different draw weights and get the same results.

THE UGLY

I reached out to B3 this morning and described the issue I was having in an email. Here is the reply I received from B3

Good morning, we also offer the new Draw in the open hook design. The open hook may be what you are looking for.

Thank you,

I’m not an engineer by any stretch but I really don’t know why a release would come to market that requires putting a bow down and getting a tool to open it. I guess I would expected a reply that included some tips about things I could do to rectify the situation. Or maybe a reply that said that shouldn’t be happening, send it in and let us take a look.

At this point I have to assume they have designed a release that can cannot be shot and reused with one hand or B3 just has poor customer service.

I will have to commend Lancaster Archery Supply for having excellent customer service and promptly sending an RA number.

I didn’t post this to bash B3 but to keep others from wasting time and money on this release.

if others have a different experience with this release I would like to hear how it’s working for you

I think the safest assumption might be that Billie Anne (from CS) is confused.

I would call and explain that the release gets stuck in the shut position. I can't imagine this is by design, and if they are worth anything then they'll make things good.

Yeah, releases where the hook flops freely and you have to press it closed to cock it really lend themselves better to an open hook design. I bought the Draw in open and closed hook versions and the closed hook version does rebound on the shot and close itself because the trigger is still depressed.

Mine opens when I hold the trigger down and flick it, but sometimes it takes more than one flick. I suspect friction from the Cerakote coating around the hook.

I'll get a review of my own out as soon as I can and examine it further.

so I have shot a nock to it for a while and one of the things I really like about it is the fact that I can run the button heavy.
I took this release out of the package and shot it without making any adjustments and the hook would not flick open.

I played with it a little and really had zero improvement until I backed the tension screw way out from the factory setting.

it seems odd they send a spring to add more tension but if you add more tension it becomes very difficult open.

I’m not sure why B3 CS couldn’t have provided me this info yesterday instead of telling me I probably bought the wrong release.

At this point I could probably live with the release but the lack of customer service may have soured me on the brand.

I appreciate everyone’s input because ultimately you guys helped me figure out how to make the Draw usable when the manufacturer could not.

Thanks for your help

I have not had one of these releases apart but it seems a very light spring where the red arrow is in the pic would really improve the performance of this release by keeping the hook open after the shot.
