I have been tossing around the idea of getting a recurve crossbow but don’t want to spend a lot of money to start off with and I have decided on the Barnett recruit recurve. Will this crossbow be effective on deer out to 30 yards and still have enough of energy to get a pass through at that distance? I know it’s not a fast crossbow to begin with but I’m willing to give it a try anyway. Another reason I’m wanting this crossbow is due to it’s ease of maintenance and being lightweight, one thing I don’t like though is it don’t come with a cocking rope.

I have seen Excalibur Matrix 355 for around $450 on here that’s what I have love it I’d take it over a Wicked Ridge Warrior not that there a bad bow but recurves are simple to work on your self even in the field if needed and there accurate. As said I would not buy a Barnett I did last year as money was tight had to sell my high end crossbow bought a Barnett was not happy with it, it did the job but soon as the season was over sold it.

I would agree that there are better bows out there and some good deals in the classifieds here. That said, to answer your question, that bow should be OK out to 25-30. My son used to get pass throughs with an Excal Vixen, which isn't that much more powerful than the bow you asked about. I'd probably go with a cut on contact head to maximize penetration.

Doing an internet search for "Barnett Recruit Recurve Spec." I found the following information
on Dicks Sporting Goods website:
Model: 78615
Speed: 245 feet per second
Draw weight: 150 pound
Energy: 65 foot pound
Power stroke: 12.5 inch
Weight: 4.5 pound (may be bare bow).
Arrow length: 20" at 420 grain (the grain weight will be the arrow with likely a 100 grain point)
This crossbow will accept the crank cocking device.
All the best.

I would not recommend you use the BCR recurve crossbow to shoot at anything bigger than a woodchuck.

WalMART is selling these for 59$. its worth it. scratch your itch and then move to something else down the road if you feel the need.https://www.walmart.com/ip/Barnett-BCR-Recurve-Crossbow-w-3-Headhunter-Arrows-Quiver/37184317
It's is worth it if it's a bow that you just want to shoot cans, targets and squirrels. See below. The KE for the crossbow is in my opinion not enough. It may have 65ft lbs of KE but what's the weight of the arrow. For 59.99 I'd just save up another couple of hundred and get a better crossbow. I found a decent one at a pawnstore and paid just under 200.00 for it. Then bought a better one at the end of the year closeouts my bow shop was having. The OP...do what you want, but I'd recommend a better bow.

From the Barnett description about the BCR Recurve you posted. The Barnett BCR Recurve Crossbow is ideal for hunting small animals and recreational target practice. The crossbow features a 150 lb draw weight and shoots at a speed of 245' per second with 65 ft.-lbs. of kinetic energy behind every shot.

I don't know why people say stuff like this. I have a barnett recruit assault recurve. I took a 6 point last year at 30 yards and got a clean pass through. 20" carbon express bolt, 125 grain G5 montec broadhead. The recruit recurve will kill a big body buck at 30 yards and under all day long. A well placed shot will get a clean pass through.

Before crossbows with my bad back I bought a 30-40# compound to hunt with made sure I had a sharp cut on contact broadhead keep your shots with in reasonable distance for the poundage and I had complete pass throughs make sure shot placement is good and keep your shots closer with it and it will kill deer. Now I’m like others I would pass on the Barnett myself if I had the money to do so but if it’s all you have go for it and be carful with your shots.

Recurve and other 'stick bow' hunters for thousands of years would have (and did actually) killed to have faster shooting equipment. A barnett recruit crossbow would have stolen the show for sure.

Point is, it can provide plenty of momentum to get the job done. And 30 yards is a reasonable distance within which to harvest deer for this crossbow. With a cut on contact two blade broadhead and a good skillset, you'd be better equipped than countless thousands of deer hunters who came before you....who put meat on the table for their families regularly.

I say have at it and hit the woods with pride. You're more privileged than many could understand.

P.S. I own a barnett recruit recurve. It's a very capable tool, in capable hands.

If it’s the bow you can afford and it works for you, well that’s all that matters! Let haters hate, you got what you wanted. It will definitely kill a deer. I have a 150 lb Vixen II that shoots about 260 fps that has passed through every deer that I’ve shot with it! Good luck!

Im a good one to talk lol. With my arrow tuning heavy arrows big scope and pricy bows :). And lets not forget a big cutting head. But i haven't forgot where i came from. And just how easy it is to shoot threw a deer. If you set the bow arrow to do what it needs to do. Would i take that bow and shoot a FOC no way.

But with a Grizzly single bevel blew right threw.

My son has the bcr and its the same as the recruit. Personally I think it is a 25 yard max crossbow. At 30 yards we had to use the 50 yard crossbar in an old Horton hawke scope we put on it. 20 yards away it does shoot well. I bought him an Excalibur G340 to replace it this year and its a big upgrade to say the least. Walmart sells another Barnett recurve that is a size bigger with more draw weight. It is also cheap and would probably be a much better option in a close price range.
