What is the best cover scent. (besides just playing the wind) I am not talking scent eliminators like Dead Down Wind, Scent Killer, etc... I am talking urine, fresh earth, acorn, skunk....

I use to put fresh earth wafers in all of my totes and my clothes always had a STRONG earth smell. Then I would go to the woods and spray EliminX on myself which I realized made zero sense! Is is better to try the complete no scent technique or try a cover scent like above?

Also, share some success stories with either.

I use the fresh earth scent waffers in my tote like you have described. But then I also like to hang a tinks scent bomb with Racoon urine in it while im up in the tree. This way it smells like earth and that blob of a moving object in the tree is a racoon, and racoon's usually hide in tree's.

It all depends on the area of wher you're hunting. I use pine scent and i put doe pee scent on my boots and on twigs and stuff around my stand.

Deerdander from Fitzgeralds. I had it on last night. I had 6 does feeding around my stand and never got busted. The wind was swirling and all they were doing was looking at first to see were the other deer was. Also I sprayed on a tree under my stand. I big doe came up and licked the spot.

As a bowhunter you need to controll your odor as much as possible. I wear scent loc and spray down before walking to my stand. On days it is hot I will spray down once at my stand and while on stand also. I use Border Crossing Scents Deer Heard in a Stick. This stuff smells like a real deer, I have used it for the past 4 years. It not only covers your odor but works as a lure also when deer come in the hit my trail they don't get alarmed or spookie. When I get to my stand I place some Deer Heard on my boots and walk from my tree through my shooting lanes and such. I have found that deer hit a trial and back track it going the way it is the most strongest most of the time.
By putting it in shooting lanes and such I have been able to set deer up for better shots. This stuff is a little costly but well worth it at $ 20.00 a stick which should last you most of the season. To order it go to www.bordercrossscents.com you can order on line or call them at the number on there site. If you call them ask for Karen and tell her Randy from RJP Outdoors told you about there product.
By the way I grew up in Lyons, Indiana not that far from where you are at, hope this helps you out. Good Hunting.

I grew up in eastern Greene Co., still hunt there. When did you leave?

Something I might take a look at. I use Code Blue EliminX and love it, but I always worry I am missing a spot and that I am gonna get busted even with my Scent-Lok. I think if I used a cover scent then I wouldn't freak out near as bad.

I personally go the scent free as possible route...no cover scents at all. I use a rubber tote for my clothes with no wafers or anything. This year I may try to put in some actual acorns or pine branches but nothing fancy.

The best cover scent I have ever used is skunk scent...yes I sais skunk scent. I know before you say it scares deer off cause they only spray when they are alerted, but as strong as the scent is it always stays on the skunk. This means where ever the skunk goes it has the smell. I take a bag of Q-tips and dip both ends and break it into and flip them out away from my stand and it works great, Yes I do spray down with scent killer but skunk scent is the way to go I dont care what anyone says.

just my 2 cents

Wash two loads of regular clothes in scent free, UV free soap. Then wash your hunting clothes in scent free, UV free soap. The first two loads take the residue from a year's worth of laundry out of the tub before the hunting clothes go in. Hang hunting clothes until dry. Get a small amount of straw. Go to the woods with a rake and a bag. Get some "real" fresh earth with the decomposing leaves and sticks and all. Get plenty. A hand full of acorns, and an early ear or two of field corn, shucked and snapped in half. Place hunting clothes, straw, fresh earth (with leaves, sticks, etc.), acorns and corn in a scent free bag (like a recycle garbage bag). Shake well. Place in trunk of car, park in the sun and bake in the scent. Forget the sprays. Wear rubber boots. Keep the clothes in the bag all season.

Took my clothes out of the washer a week ago and they still smelled like the fresh earth from the year before.

Wife thinks I'm crazy - wash the clothes then throw dirt on them!

For a cover scent, I'd go with hardwood smoke too.

I prefer to go scent free though.

I still like a spray of **** urine on my boots. I've seen deer cross this scent trail numerous times and show next to no reaction. I figure it's just about the only scent a guy can use that can go from ground to treetop and still seem natural. :set1_thinking::dontknow:
