I shoot a Hoyt Pro Defiant at 70 lbs and Easton FMJ arrows with a 125 grain G5 Montec (whole setup is around 540 grains). I'm going on my first black bear hunt in a few weeks and I'm wondering what fixed blades have worked well for everyone? I've read about (and had) a few issues with these G5's not leaving enough of a blood trail

I am was in the same boat. I never felt like the Montec left a good trail. I switch between exodus and viper tricks. Any fixed head will work well though. Black bears dont go far with any broadhead in there lungs!

I love my Rage broad heads, but had a bear outfitter that would not let me use mechanicals, so after a ton of shooting and testing I landed on the Wack Em 3 blade XL. Love them!!!! Slick trick and exodus are nice when I shot bears, but for some reason I had the best results with Wac Em 3 blade XLs

I am not one to overthink something like this (I will use whatever head i'm using for everything) but if I was buying a bear specific head for bear I would look hard at the German Kinetic XXL, I have never shot them, but nobody has anything bad to say about them, and they cut a huge hole, which can be a very big asset on a bear. bear are seemingly the easiest thing to kill with a well placed arrow, but if the arrow placement isn't perfect they are very hard to kill, and may go a long ways, bears tend to not bleed well (though all of mine have) but a big cut could be a real benefit in the case of bear hunting.

they are not nearly heavily structured as elk, actually closer to deer, so consider that. something that will hold an edge, effectively cutting the whole way through will give more blood on the ground. lots of really good choices though (exodus, magnus ser razor, iron will, kudu, steel force, vpa, cutthroat, etc) your arrow weight is really good already, so you are already ahead of the game. good luck on your hunt!

I,ve shot em Rocket Arrowheads and Nap Razorbacks.. Hair is long and blood congiels quickly. blood trails scant.. But compared to a whitetail they expire Very easy and quickly if ya hit em right,,,stay away from shoulders,, can,t penetrate those even with a 30/30

Don't over think it. A bear in most case is easier to get than a deer use what ever you have confiedance in. My choice for everything is Exodus.
