What is a good handheld release(thumb trigger) for less than $100. Im hoping that one will help a lil bit of target panic that ive got. I cant shoot backtension with a finger trigger release so Im hoping I can get used to shooting backtension with a thumb trigger.

Get a TRUBall Chappy Boss in the Classifieds here on AT. You can find one for $80-100 easily. Very wide range of adjustability on trigger tension and can be adjusted for Zero trigger travel. I think you'll enjoy this release.

Good luck,
Byron :)

Look for the Solution 3 here on AT Classifieds. Can probably get one at or just below $100.

Definitely a very fine release and you can shoot it BOTH back tension hinged release style, or with a thumb trigger as it's convertible.

Other than that, find a Carter with the ITS that fits your hand nicely. You'll want a very heavy trigger spring as that would help you learn how to shoot it with back tension easier and not punch so easily. With a medium or light spring, it's waaay to easy to command or punch even if you think you're using back tension.

But seriously, I would suggest a hinged release from any of the major manufacturers, the Solution 3 or the new Carter Evolution that's set to come out end of the month.

All the best.

I totally agree here w/ SABER. I like the BT Gold 4 finger by TruBall for my pure back tension release. It is very smooth and easy to shoot. You can get one brand new for around $70 or look for a used one here on the classifieds.
good luck

I prob would try it but I dont have anyone to show/help me learn it. I figured I would be able to teach myself (and for it to be a lil safer:wink: ) with a thumb release.

Help you learn it......it as hard as everyone thinks it is. Hook the thing on the string and pull it back. Trust me if you don't do it right it will let you know.

Man don't even think about it. People have little kids shooting these things. It really isn't that hard. When you first start using one either shoot it with the thumb bar on it so that you can keep preasure on that side of the release, or you can get one with a safety. Even if you don't use a safety or a thumb bar you will figure out how much pressure you need to keep on your index finger just so you can draw it back. Set it heavy (slow) to start and it won't take you but about 10 times (if that) to draw the bow back before you feel ok doing it. I have only ever hit myself in the nose 1 time and that was with someone elses release and that thing was set so light that you had to draw it back with one finger, I think a gnat could have landed on that thing and set it off.

pure back tension

Try a Zenith X-Cell for pure back tension.
IMHO you can't learn learn to dance on sneakers, so fit you some dancing shoes.
back off your limbs for lower poundage, and start out blank baling for a long long time to get the feel.
then every once in a while turn back to blank baling.
I even did some blind folded to really get the feel of it.
When you actually have "muscle memory" for back tension, it's a breeze.

Don't believe the ghost-stories on nose bleeds or split lips, keep your mind to the game, and you'll have no worries.

just my opinion

The release would mainly be for hunting(the reason for the thumb trigger) but I plan to eventually shoot some targets...
