Hey team!

Your Favorite (hopefully) Canadian Rookie back again to ask questions. Finally got my Bow all figured out, and confident enough to hunt, BUT I have a few questions before small game season (Grouse mainly) opens up. When I'm out hunting for birds, whats the best head I should be using? I'm shooting at 60Lbs draw right now (using a PSE Ferocity). I was looking at Judo points, but all of the ones I'm seeing say they'd break on first shot, and while I think getting a couple of birds, I'd hate to spend $10 a bird, when a 22 shot is only 30cents.

Thanks for all the future tips! :)

Is there a specific one you would recommend? Definitely see a lot of cheap ones on amazon, but thats where I'm reading the reviews that even the ones in store do the same (Though who knows, maybe they've only ever shot cheap ones).

We shoot a bunch of them in Idaho. We found the simple "adder" flipped backwards behind a field point works as well as anything and are far less expensive when broken or lost. Hit them higher than you'd think. The vitals sit high up in the chest. Those suckers are tough and can easily take chest/breast hits and fly away.

I've shot a ton of birds with my bow. Judo's are fine but eventually you will miss and ruin/bend the point, as with any other tip. Points such as G5 small game heads, Easton V3 expandable, are awesome as well but will become dull or bend over time-they are soft. The best bang for your buck and to help save arrows when shooting into rocks (Chukar/Rock chucks) or into any other hard surface and still pop your arrow up so you can find it is the Saunders Bludgeon. These things just take a beating and the best part is they save your arrows for splitting and having the insert climb up inside. Be sure to test them first as you may have to hold a little high, they aren't too arrowdynamic :). It just so happens that I use my 40yard pin at 30 yards when shooting full length GT Twister arrows and the Bludgeon tips. If your not too concerned with all that and just want to hit and kill it try the VPA (Vantage Point Archery) thumper. They are flat out killers and get VERY heavy if that's what your looking for. The least expensive as said earlier will be your Adder add-ons with any old target point.

Used to carry judo for grouse & shot some & got them but hit several knocked them out of tree & fly
away so started using the broadheads I was hunting with & ended fly aways.

To all those suggesting a gun, you're right. :p I do carry a shotgun with me for when its convenient, but it'd be nice to break into the bow hobby.

thanks everyone for the suggestions! those blunt heads seem like a really good idea! Though reading reviews lots of guys say it'll injure the animal, but often doesn't kill. Are they just shooting too low? I will be pulling at about 60lbs, so I'm confident a good shot SHOULD knock a grouse down, and kill it (fingers crossed)

I've shot a handful of them with my bow, I love grouse hunting with archery tackle. They don't get much credit for being fiercely intelligent, but they love to scurry into cover, have great camoflague and are tough little birds (I've had a few fly off with an arrow in them, never lost one but you'd be surprised how far they'll go). I've always used bludgeons, they work well and are cheap, but a little more likely to skip or get dig into the ground than a judo. G5's are lethal, but I've never shot a grouse with one.

that is the plan! I love a good 'Grouse hike' and it definitely makes it more of a sport. While I do love my shotgun, my location has generally good levels of grouse, and once I get close to my yearly limit, I love the idea of changing over to the bow and just getting into the earth.

Had the same question - let me know what your experience is with whatever you end up going with. Sounds like I'm in the same boat as you.

Bowhunting grouse is a blast, sure you may not connect on every bird you see but hey thats hunting.

I have used Muzzy's, G5 heads, judo points, adder points and made my own.

The homemade ones are by far the cheapest option and work great on rabbits and other small game animals as well.

The Muzzys and G5 are quite expensive for a 3 pack and the adder points fly terribly and I missed plenty of birds due to their erratic flight!
