OK guys let's hear it.

Best heavy weight hoodie. Doesn't need to be specifically a hunting brand. Looking for something that can be worn as outer layer or mid layer depending on the weather. Again, doesn't need to be camo (black, brown, green, grey etc are fine)

Is the Sitka HW really worth 160$

At the moment I'm leaning towards a black ovis Kelee 250g merino hoodie but I'm all ears.

Its a full zip and not a pull over but the Sitka Equinox hoody (now the traverse) is one of my favorite mid/outer tops that I've ever owned. Stupid warm, dead quiet, works extremely well for a mid layer and great for an outer if the wind isn't blowing hard (no dedicated windblocking layer).

I bought mine at a reasonable discount when they switched it from the Equinox to Traverse. At first, full listed MSRP was hard to swallow but now after using it for a few years, I would pay full price to replace it, if anything were ever to happen to it.

A lot of high end hunting "hoodies" are nothing more than a moderate weight grid fleece and IMO are not worth the cost...

Kuiu branded hoodie is heavy weight. And the fit is the best I have ever worn.
best to get on sale though. Mine has the ram skull on it.

The HW hoodie isn’t really that heavy, the traverse is quite a bit heavier, and the gradient if you can find it

sitka is all overpriced, but that’s life. My favorite hoodie for hunting is the fanatic, and I would pick it over the HW for sure, it’s worth the extra money but both are grossly overpriced for what they are

if you can find a gradient (discontinued) I think you would be happy with it, and if you can find one, they will be marked down since they are discontinued

the HW hoodie is not heavy weight though, and neither are the fanatics, but both are warm for what they are

I would say they are going to be at least as warm as 250g merino though, and the anti microbial treatment Sitka uses works well, they don’t get stinky, I would say on par with merino, and though I love merino and wear it almost every hunt, it will not last like synthetic, it will wear out quite a bit faster.

Hey, I'm new to forums in general! I've heard these are great spaces for communities to connect and exchange ideas. I’d love to start a conversation and ask: What do you think makes the perfect oversized hoodie? What styles or aesthetics do you prefer? Feel free to share images of your favorite looks or outfits!

Good info guys. I generally agree on the hoodie being a pain sometimes but I’m looking for a do all type of hoodie. Hunt, fish, scout, camo etc. I can get Sitka for a steep discount via a dealer friend so much appreciated on the alternatives from them

It’s personal preference, the vast majority of what I own for hunting clothes has a hood, and I almost always pick hooded versions of anything if offered… hoods don’t bother me and I feel they make most garments a little more versatile… it’s just personal preference, because I like hoodies as much as others dislike them

even my lighter shirts I prefer a hood if the option is there… I rarely have a hood up when actually hunting, but I like having them, and they are warmer, and I loose neck gaiters about as soon as I buy them. I have a few laying around but if I needed to find one for this afternoon, I’d be in trouble… hoods are always where I leave them 😉

I wore a
Cabela's Instinct Midweight Half-Zip Hoodie for Men
the other day when it was 58 with a basic white T under it for the PM sit.... it was enough to keep me still in the stand with 15 mph wind.

The Keele is interesting with the way they weave it but I haven't tried it. I have the Timber Creek Hoody and it's very nice but I haven't worn it much yet. Generally the BlackOvis stuff is very good for the price and I have a bunch of it.

Now personally, I find merino to be completely misplaced as a mid layer. Merino holds 33% of it's weight in water and while it feels warm when wet next to skin - that feature doesn't do much good for a mid layer. Merino is a weaved fabric so it's not able to get the same loft as a polyester fleece at the same GSM. GSM does not equal warmth as not all loft is equal. Polyester holds .3% of it's weight in water and can be brushed to loft it. My Kuiu Peloton 200 is incredible at staying dry & warm. I don't find mid layers to get stunk up like base layers. I've sat in the stand in a light drizzle and literally watched the steam roll off it and never actually got wet. The Kuiu 97 is sweet but fragile for my liking. My go to on nearly every hunt in Montana or whitetail in Kentucky is 150 gsm merino baselayer, Kuiu 200 fleece, Kelvin Active Hoody and top with a shell of some sort.

I will say I have a Smartwool Intraknit merino hoody that is 190 gsm and 50/50 polyester. Meaning it dries and holds nearly 50% less sweat keeping you warmer while still having the merino feel. It's an open weave and breathes incredible. I am going to try it next to skin on really cold days then add mid layers.

One of the warmer ones I have was 10$ at Walmart. Just a really thick hoodie. I’d imagine Hanes or someone similar put it out. I wore it with a t shirt and a light fleece jacket this morning at it was mid 30s. If your gonna use it for everything might add well be affordable. Gonna tear it up anyways

It’s soooo heavy and thick though. I never wear mine anymore. My Sitka travese is just as warm and like a 1/4 of the weight. Sitka hw hoody and the travease as an outer layer is perfect down to 30 degrees for me. Wearing both isn’t even as half a thick as the wooltimate stuff nor does it weigh as much.

We might also consider portable rechargeable hand warmers. They can provide warmth for outdoor activities, whether it's waiting in the cold or engaging in outdoor sports. Not only will they keep your hands toasty, but they can make your whole body feel more comfortable.😁
