If you were in the market for a brand new long bow and money was not an option whom would you get to build you a long bow? Would you go with a 1 piece, 2 piece, or a 3 piece?

I currently like 62” recurves as I am a 29.25” draw. I like 43-45 pounds at 28”

I had a Mike Treadway I sold and regret it every day now. I’ve shot a few others and the hand shock was just too much for me, I definitely want a hybrid long bow for hunting more reflex deflex, and want a bow with a locator style grip.

Thanks in advance.

I would get Kegan of Omega longbows to make me something since he is focused on performance. I don't need exotic woods. A bow is not a musical instrument where wood makes a big difference. I also like his legacy as the Economical Archer. I think he should bring that back.

Totally agree.

I received an Omega Imperial in Oct. 2019, excellent bow.

I liked it so much that I ordered a new Royal Huntsman which arrived in Sept. 2020.

I love the grip style, which is the same for both bows. Kegan is using Dymalux for the risers not, this material is dense and very rigid, the density gives my Royal Huntsman a mass weight of 36 oz.

Kegan is a pleasure to deal with, delivery times are great, in my case, both bows were made to order and were shipped within 6 weeks of ordering them. In y opinion, the pricing is quite attractive for what you are getting.

The Imperial is very smooth to draw and shoot, the Royal Huntsman may beat it by a bit, which is hard to do IMHO.

Both mine are "keepers".

I have attached some pictures of my Royal Huntsman, its riser material is Coffee Dymalux.

I have a Martin Savannah which is the quietest, most shock free and amongst the fastest stick bows I've ever shot - I would gladly buy another but if spending new money I would have to give some consideration to an Omega or Toelke. Also are no flies on a Hill bow - the one I foolishly traded away shot heavy arrows better than any other bow I've had.

Look at the Omega 64” Spirit or the 66” Royal Huntsman. The owner Kegan builds a performance oriented reflex deflex 1 piece longbow with an emphasis on performance and comfort . I have an Omega Spirit and can highly recommend the bow . Kegan is a great guy to work with.

Try and avoid mass produced longbows, they rarely feel good to shoot. Everyone will give you their favorite brand, touting it as the best, with little or no data to back that up. My only advice as a lifelong longbow shooter is get plenty of R/D and a riser with some mass.

Since I started shooting traditional I wanted a ASL style longbow. Last year I had one made by St. Patrick Lake Longbows. I picked everything about the bow and he hit my draw weight on the head. 68” Black and white ebony...32# @ 27”. Learning to shoot this bow correctly has been a fun challenge that I have not mastered by any means. Arrow spine and weight are critical and gripping the bow correctly is the difference between a beautifully executed shot and , let’s just say the bow let’s you know you screwed up.

Some good bows mentioned....but if it were me;

I would want a 2 piece as I travel to hunt and a one piece longbow isn't the easiest thing to fly with

I wouldn't want to wait a year to get it....that rules out a bunch of builders

Considering your DL, I would get a 66" 2 piece Toelke Whip....you can thank me later. I get that you like shorter bows....but I doubt you will say that after owning that Whip.

If Short is THE critical factor- then a 2 pc Shrew...or the Toelke equivalent.

Lots to consider. The first thing I look at when buying any bow is the grip. A grip will make or break a bow for me. Was your Treadway a one piece or three piece takedown? The reason I ask is that some people like a lighter mass weight bow and others like a heavy bow. I have a lot of longbows and like them all both 1, 2 and 3 piece. I do tend to shoot a heavier bow better than a lighter bow. Now when I order a bow I get an all phenolic or phenolic/wood combo or all G10 riser because I like the weight and I also find it will have less "hand shock" than one with wood. The G10 or phenolic just does not flex and you get no vibration after the shot. You mentioned you like a locator type grip. Mike Treadway is still building bows, Poison Dart builds great 2 piece bows and has a locator grip, the 3 piece yellowstone half breed is a nice bow with a locator type grip, never owned a Primal Tech but they have terrific reviews. I would really consider how you like to hold your bow and how the handle of the bow is designed.

I shoot a recurve style grip well. I have ordered me a omega spirit.

I am looking forwards to trying it. I may also give a micarta toelke Whistler s try. I spoke to Dan awhile back and just an amazing gentleman as soon is Kegan at Omega.

I do not like a traditional long bow grip or a straight Broom stick grip. I like a good locater grip or a recurve style grip the best. I love my bob lee grips.

I’ve killed deer with my recurve now I want to hunt with a long bow, then possibly move to a self bow, before going to a spear😜💪

Dan at toelke recommended a 60” Whistler but man that seems short but he said it shoots like a longer length bow.

Mike Treadway is an unbelievable bowyer with no website and always has a good list and is full time builder. I’ve been to his shop and it is amazing how clean it is and organized. He is a great guy plus is only 2 hours away. I really should get him to built me a black swamp which is the recurve style Grip. For as many bows as he builds and sales you never see many for sale, a man who builds that many bows and does it full time and has a list and you never hardly see them for sale that says allot. I know my Black Forest was fast man it was only 4fps slower then my bob lee at same weight. And it was a 64” bow compared to a 62” bob lee recurve.

Trad Hunter : congrats and good choice with your Omega Spirit ! I also was shooting a 62” recurve prior to buying my Omega Spirit and love it . The 64” length works both for stable target shooting and hunting . The grip on the Spirit is a little narrower than my 3 pc. recurves and fits my hand perfectly! Let us know your impressions when you get your Omega.
