What I did, before choosing a unit in Idaho, was review the success data for 3-5 years. I picked the unit with highest average success and lowest average hunter numbers. Success rates can change a good bit from year to year, depending on many factors--like wolves, fires, bad weather, etc. Then, I kept hunting that same unit for 6 years in a row. My plan worked for me. I killed 2 bulls over those 6 years, making my personal success rate 33%.

I decided to take a break from elk this year. Next year, I plan to try a different state--maybe Montana.
