A week or so ago I read on this forum about training dogs to blood trail and find lost and wounded game. Where can I get more information about this interesting concept?

Alma's every hunting ranch in Texas and south Africa has a tracking dog.

Yesterday Snoopy my African Terrier now US Citizen dog
went with my Lady DOT at the sound of a shot 150 ya-rs from our front door, Snoopy saw a big 6 point Buck 210# live weight onter drop after getting shot by her Don wit a 30/30 rifle. Buck was down but kicky and Snoopy nailed hima nd started to tear him up when eh quick kicking. She thinks she killed the buck and we are not disagreeing

I wrote about snoopy in past thread. In Germany the Jeagermiesters(sp) carry dachshunds in Grey leather back pack on hunts to trail wounded boar, Red Deer Stag and little doe deer.

Little dogs seem to be keener and better trackers

bloodtrailing dogs

Actualy Tink, I thought your "African" terrier was a Jack Russel...
Concerning bloodtrailing dogs - I am thinking about getting a Hannoverische Schweisshund - Hannoveranian hound. My second choices would be Jack Russel or German Jagd terrier but the Hanoveranian is supposed to be slower and more consistant on the bloodtrail while we all know how terriers are - a burning stick of dynamite!
I would also consider the dachshund and also there are some breeds of higher legged bracke - dachshunds.
These all are some specialy bred hunting breeds, but almost any dog can be trained to follow a blood trail!

I have a yellow lab that I use to blood trail. I have been talking with Bushman about also about using Walkers. They are tough dogs with great noses, and that is another possiblity for you. I personally do not care much for small dogs, JMPO. I have found that alot of people use labs with great success. I recommended the Walker, and also the American Bulldog to Bushman, because of where he lives and the need for a dog that can take care of its self.

No Blood

Here is my non blood trailing dog. Sorry but I do not beleive in a dog trailing a deer for any reason. She likes the Harley and stands behind the shotgun exhaust and lets her ears flop though. We may go to Sturgis some year and enjoy the topless ladies.

Just curious, if you lose the blood trail or hit the deer high and get very little blood which is better, useing a dog that has been trained to trial and finding the deer or completely loseing the deer. I know that you can always go back the next day or that afternoon, and do a grid pattern. But it is a lot better IMO to have a dog that you can fall back on if needed. I personally havenot needed to use my lab yet, but I know if I did he is there! I have gone and gotten him after I found the deer to see how he does, and I know without a doubt it needed he would be able to find the deer.
