How much difference is there in diameter between a bowstring and a crossbow string?

In reference to this thread http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2148120 I have come up with a way to test the trigger mechanism without using the string on the crossbow or loading it and risking an accidental firing or dry fire, but I need something to simulate the string. I was thinking an old bowstring would work if it is close to the diameter of what the crossbow string is. I'm thinking a crossbow string is probably a bit bigger in diameter than a bowstring but can any of you guys that have both or service them confirm my suspicion?

I have more experience with recurve crossbows, but their strings are significantly thicker than a vertical bow.

Thats what I was thinking too. I may have to scavenge up and old crossbow string to work on my idea.
