I was currently looking around for ideas on how I want to build my new bow vise and started to wonder why almost all bow vices clamp to the limbs. Why isn’t anything designed to clamp to the riser. It seams to me that the riser would be the more ideal place to mount a bow to work on. Seams it would be much more stable.

I think the main reason is the height of the bow and work bench and your eye level. When my bow is in either vise I own the rest area, which is where 90% is the vise work goes on, is almost exactly eye level.

I think BAP makes a vise that clamps riser/grip.

Baker and Ultimate Bow Vise clamp on the grip/riser. I have the Ultimate on order: Howard's Ultimate Bow Vise - Total Vise
It checkes all the boxes for what I want in my home shop.

Built my own that goes into the stabilizer hole & has worked for me for about 30 years now. 3/8" rod with 5/16/24 thread on end to screw in to stab & the 3/8" rod slides into a 3/8" female coupler that has 2 threaded lock screws to position bow level & the 5/16 threaded part has a coupler from stabilizer adapter to lever it left & right. Have it mounted on a type writer table. Tried to do pics but camera isn't working.

Round a pic in my archives.

Seems to me the riser would be a better place to clamp also. I copied a design from the DIY section here that mounts in the stab threaded hole and it works for me. A little tedious to get level but I only work on my own bows so a little extra time isn't a big deal. As far as height goes, I don't mind the bow being lower since I'm not very tall.

With long riser parallel or past parallel limbs gripping the riser makes more sense than it used to. I'm a cheap bast@#$, so I use a photography clamp (Manfrotto Super Clamp) and photography is another hobby of mine so the crossover made sense. This clamp with a sturdy ball head will hold any bow in just about any position.

Worked with my Apple vice since summer of 2008 - new then. Me and it get along. 14 1/2 years and a long, long ways from being wore out. More like just getting broke in.
Mounted on the corner of the worktable I can turn it 360 degrees and turn it 270 degrees sideways.
Ain't seen anything here to make me want to drop any money on.....

I just got one of these. Saw someone else posted it on Facebook saying it’s a good one clamp it to the grip and good to go a lot of adjustment to it. Couldn’t see spending $200 plus on a vise that would do the same as this $40 bike vise.

I use the same bike vise. Works great.

Sorry Sonny fat fingers FOUND not sound!

I have a bench mounted bicycle vice that works great with my bows. Prior to that, I owned an early model Spewing Jason, but got tired of removing the stab to screw it into the vice. The bike vice is adusted to hold my stabilzer and works just fine for what I typically need it for. Cost me about $25 a few years ago.....just cannont see spending over $200 on a bow vice. If anything more is needed, I can simply set it in my BTM press in the vertical position and work on my bow there as well.
