I placed this thread in the WI area for WI residents to discuss the current situation relating to Bowhunting in our state and our laws and regulations. As a Wisconsin Bowhunter, you are aware of the current deer herd situation and how the herd has declined. Today, the WI DNR posted this info.
"For the second consecutive year, certain regular deer management units in northern Wisconsin will not have any antlerless tags deer tags available (zero quota). This structure is designed to help deer herds recover quicker in deer management units that are significantly below population goals. However, under existing rules archery deer hunters could still harvest and tag antlerless deer in regular units with a zero quota, using the "Archery Antlerless Carcass Tag" that comes with their license. A new proposal would restrict the use of the Archery Antlerless Carcass Tag to deer management units that have an antlerless quota."

This move is a good one and will help the WI deer herd rebound. WBH began working on this measure with the DNR last year as a way to address fairness issues to gun hunters and to do our part to assist with the rebuilding of the deer herd.
Below is a link to the press release by WBH from back in March spelling out WBH support for such a rule change.

Currently hunters are frustrated and many have taken to closing their lands to hunting as well as some boycotting hunting all together until the population rebounds. Right now, Deer hunters in WI are looking to kill fewer deer and understand that Bowhunting here is under assault because of our own successes. Last year, there were calls to move the gun season up a week into the rut as well as removing the antlerless tag that Bowhunters get when they purchase their archery license. While this new restriction on Bowhunters is the proper thing to help with the deer herd recovery in WI, having the archery deer season shortened and tags removed is not something Bowhunters here in WI should be looking forward to. At this point, deer hunters are not looking for additional harvests of deer and certainly gun hunters do not support an increase in the number of Bowhunters or an increase of Bowhunting harvests prior to the gun deer season. At this critical point, if that were to happen, we can expect gun hunters to increase their calls for restrictions on Bowhunters.
Right now, Bowhunting is very strong in WI. The number of archery deer tags sold in 2008 (2009 data not yet out) was only 300 off the all time record. Wisconsin Bowhunters are passionate about the sport and the season and because nobody in WI is excluded from enjoying the sport, we have no problems with recruitment and retention.
The DNR has now listed the reduced antlerless tag quotas in the units that will permit antlerless harvest. (18 units will prohibit antlerless harvest) Below is a list of the units with limited antlerless quotas. The Quota is the number of antlerless the DNR wants harvested and the number of permits available factors in historic success rates meaning they sell more tags than the quota because the success rate is never 100%

These antlerless tags will go on sale mid to late August at a rate of one per person per day. Be mindful this fall that these tags are also going to very limited in many cases and gun hunters will be looking to purchase their antlerless tags from this limited supply. As a Bowhunter in WI, please halp to do your part to help the herd rebound lest the calls increase to shorten the archery deer season and/or remove archery tags. The current number of hunters and the current weapons have proven more than capable to not only control the WI deer herd but to be able to over harvest the herd.
