Bows for Vets!

I am wanting to test the waters on something and get some feedback from AT. In my involvement with archery I have come across multiple situations where veterans of our armed forces (USA) were attempting to get into archery. Often these vets are on limited budgets and are new to archery, thus needing some instruction and help getting into the sport. In the past I have tried directing some to the various charities set up for helping vets with hunting and shooting sports. However, many people are very reluctant to ask for help. I know of CWWAF and they seem to do good work, but the vet has to apply in person and generally speaking be in rehab to get assistance.

What has pushed me to action is that I currently have a good friend who is a vet that was wounded in the middle east. I won't get into his story without his permission, but he's a great guy and I'd like to help him out. He has gone into teaching, which is not the best paying field, but he's great with kids and works his butt off for his family and in helping coach sports outside of his job. I've been teaching his daughter archery and he has now become very interested in learning himself, but has no equipment.

I am interested in setting up a project to help people like my friend. Rather than having the vets have to apply for assistance (which many won't) I'd rather surprise them with a setup that can help get them jump started in archery. I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to set something up like this but want to make sure there would be support to do so. I have the resources/know-how to setup a a website (already have a domain name reserved and am working on the site) and have some lawyer help with the charity setup side if needed.

What I am looking for is support from the community in donating equipment, and also ideas on how this could work. I am considering setting up an application form for people to nominate a vet. Probably the top two things that worry me are dishonesty, and making sure that the vet gets the right sized equipment. Feedback is welcome!

If you have an equipment to donate (any and all archery equipment!) please let me know via pm. I would like to first get a bow setup for this awesome vet and start looking for other candidates for the future.

I will donate a complete bow set up. It is a High Country Speed Force 60 # limbs with adjustable draw length modules, I will put a Trophy Ridge 5 pin sight on it and it has a QAD HDX rest on it. I am currently using this bow but I have a replacement waiting, I will just need a week or 2 to practice with the other bow. This is a good bow that shoots great. If you think being a teacher is a poor paying job try being a carpenter !!! OK guys he has a bow now he needs some arrows, I have always used Gold Tip Pro Hunters or Ultralight 400s with it but any 400 series arrow will be fine. Good Luck with this.

That's freakin' awesome! Thanks for stepping up. Shoot me a pm when you are ready to roll.

Honestly, right now anything would help. I plan on setting up an inventory of donated parts so that it's easy to track what is available. Being used is not an issue as long as it is in good condition, or can be made to be in good condition.

Once things are rolling better I'll setup an "equipment needed" list that we can work off of. Otherwise I'll probably end up with 32 sights and 2 rests.

Okay guys, thank you very much for the feedback. The ball is rolling and I am going to do this! Just don't let my wife know, she thinks I do too many things already. Though I'm not sure how I'll explain boxes and stuff arriving.

I've got a domain name purchased and the website is starting to take shape, though it's going to take a bit to get the functionality that I want. Most likely I'll have something to unveil (in a very basic form) this weekend. If you would like to donate (thanks to those that have volunteered already, here and in pm!) please shoot me a pm and I will get you a mailing address. For major items like bows or full setups, I'll keep track of the donator and make sure they get feedback on where there gear ends up.

Before taking submissions for recipients of gear, I want to get a couple of setups configured, cataloged and ready to go. Here is where I've got to fill in some blanks...first off, ideally it would be cool to have the recipients be surprised, however, it's necessary to know draw lengths and weights to match them properly. With the first recipient I am hoping to surprise, I am having him try out one of my bows and my son's bows so that I can size him up. This could prove to be somewhat difficult for some situations, so I'm open to suggestions.

Secondly, how to verify that a nominated recipient is real deal? I really hate to consider that dishonesty will happen, but let's be honest and understand that sooner or later someone will try to game the system. I know some charities for vets require proof of service, etc. Something to think on, and once again, I'd love some feedback.

One other thing, at this time I think I'll accept donations for any decent gear in working (or close) condition. I've worked as a bow mechanic and can fix/tune about anything, as long as all the parts are there or can be found somewhat easily. I believe that I will also seek official charitable entity status so that donations can be tax deductible. Good thing there's a lawyer and accountant in my family willing to help!

Thanks guys! I can't tell you how excited I am to get moving on this.

There has been some inquiries into giving monetary donations to Bows for Vets. I think this is a great idea, but it will take me some time to get this properly set up. Most likely I will have to get registered as a non-profit first, then setup something through PayPal. It is possible to do this without non-profit status in PayPal, but they take more fees that way (2.9% + $.30 per transaction.) I may go with the second option to get things rolling faster, but whatever the case it has to be done very carefully so as to keep the IRS happy and off our backs!

I'll have a full basic accessory setup to donate after the holiday season. As a vet myself I think this is an awesome idea. Not only is archery fun, but it gives you a level of relaxation that in my opinion is worth its weight in gold. As the VA is pushing a lot of meditation etc. for PTSD, archery may be the perfect option for guys who are struggling to find their comfort zone. Personally I just put on my headphones, jam music, and send some arrows down range. Nothing better for relaxation.

You mentioned having proof of discharge and disability. According to my wife you need the DD form 214 (military discharge). The Member 4 (will be on bottom of form) shows character of discharge.

If they don't have a copy of their DD-214 a VA ID could also be acceptable. You can't get the va card without proof of eligibility.

You may also try contacting your local VFW or American Legion post to see if they can help or if they know anyone that qualifies.

As a disabled vet and vfw member, I think this is a great idea. I am lucky that NJ gives all hunting and fishing licenses, tags, permits and stamps free to disabled veterans. Keeps hunting very affordable.

I had company over the last weekend so not much progress was made then, but now I'm up and moving again. On this veterans' day I'd like to thank all those for their service and great sacrifices. Our vets don't get near enough attention, thanks nor praise.

I've cleared out space and am starting to set up an inventory system. If anyone has any donations to make, please start doing so! You can either PM me for shipping information or hit up http://bowsforvets.com for the information. Along with the inventory system I am setting up an accountability matrix. Basically what this is will be a way for me to let you know where your equipment goes. I am also almost ready to start receiving nominations for recepients, so watch for a link on the webpage for that very soon.

It's been a couple of frustrating days as my web host shut off my ability to use contact forms for some unknown and unexplained reason. This is also affecting my other forms on archeryreport.com and archerycalculator.com so they universally messed everything up. Therefore, at this time I cannot implement any form for contacts or nominee submissions at this time. Hopefully they will get this fixed soon! Sorry for the delay.
