record bucks taken

Here are some newspaper clips of a couple record bucks taken in KS this season. Thought you guys might enjoy them.

This buck was taken by Vincent Poff, a resident of Leavenworth, KS, where I spent over 13yrs of my life... not behind bars mind you.

From the article:

"Poff, a 15 year bowhunting veteran, bagged this buck under Leavenworth's new deer management program which give bowhunters the opportunity to take deer inside the city limits." This was the first year of the new program.

"The buck earned a net scor of 176-5/8 to make the Buckmasters record book. Though the rack looks fairly typical at first glance, a few tines were abnormal. Under Buckmasters' system, it was classified as a semi-typical."

It was taken on Oct. 11, 2004.

This buck was listed in the 24 Dec issue of the Leavenworth Times:

It was taken by Ron Ewert on Oct. 15th, 2004 about 6 miles NW or Leavenworth. The deer is classified as a non-typical totalling 31 points. When scored by P&Y, the deer racked up a scor of 266-2/8, a record non-typical in Kansas. The deer's state record status is still pending final approval from a P&Y panel. Upon confirmation, it will replace the one taken in Pottawatomie County by Dale Larson of Olsburg in 1998 wheich measured 264-1/8.

Ron's neighbor, Brian Beying, took a 22pt non-typical last year from the same area.

Ironically, wehn Ewert left the house that afternoon on Oct 15th, he started searching for arrowheads neear a creek bed that borders the edge of the cornfield on the west side. he was more concerned with observing the deer patterns so he could set up a stand for firearms season. "I found out a long time ago you don't ever go out in the woods without your equipment. As he headed back to the house about 4pm, he noticed the big buck about 100yds away. he kept going on his 4 wheeler as if he hadn't seen the deer, moving about 200 yds further. "I took a deep breath and decided to try to stalk him. I went down the creek as easy as slow as I could and came out into the field where I thought I'd seen him last." The deer had laid down and was about 40yds away, well past the 30yd range Ewert was comfortable with. "He was too far away, but he was facing the other way. I just kept creeping forward toward him as easy as I could. When he turned and looked at me, I drew my bow. I think I took one more step toward him and he jumped up to run. That's when I hit him."

Ewert said his bow had cracked when he drew, though he didn't know it at the time. But that didn't affect the 33yd shot, which dropped the deer after a short run. Ewert has been bowhunting since he was 14yrs old.

Fair chase you be the judge

The story about the Ewart buck needs some clarification. My understanding is that the deer was spotted during a scouting trip as stated in the article, and Mr Ewart observed the deer not moving and thought it to be dead. As he approached the deer he discovered that it was not dead but also could not get up. He called the Sherrifs department and asked them if he could put it out of its misery and legally keep the rack since it was not Firearms season. The deputy told him the only way to legally do this is to buy an archery tag and shoot him with a bow.
I have heard that he borrowed a bow and walked up to the deer and made a poor shot thru the guts. The deer was suffering from a badly infected wound at the back of his jaw bone. I understand that he had to use a shop vac to suck all of the maggots out.
This will be a shame if it is accepted as the new Non typical record for Kansas it is nothing more than a glorified Road kill. jmho

Haven't heard about that version. My info came directly from the newspaper article. It would be a shame, as you said, if what you say was true and I agree, it shouldn't be accepted as a new record.

I heard the same story........the deer was so sick it didnt want to or couldnt hardly move! A wise old buck of that caliber in good health aint going to let you just slip up on him and jump up and watch you draw and stick him!
Im sure they will look into the circumstances of how this buck was taken and do the right thing!
Either way, this guy should start buying lottery tickets!LOL

I guess what they say is true. Shoot a nice buck like that, and jealous hunters will spread lies before the ink dries on your tag.

How about waiting a little while before bashing this kill as a "glorified road kill"?

Jealous? Lies?

MOC,
First of all I don't appreciate being called a liar. My information came direct from the horses mouth. I also would be the first guy to congratulate this guy if he had killed it how the article was written. Most Bucks of this size are killed by some stroke of luck, which I have nothing against. The problem I have is that this story is total BS and it should not be considered for the record books, period.

The guy who shot this deer told you what you posted above? Your use of the phrases "I have heard" and "it is my understanding" don't lead me to believe he did.

My information comes directly from his neighbor. This buck lived on the neighboring property most of the time and had not been seen much this summer. When he shot the deer he told the neighbor how it went down. I don't have a problem with this deer being put out of its misery, I do have a problem with the story that was printed in the paper.

In other words, you didn't get your story "direct from the horses mouth" as you stated above. Again, I'd give this some time before calling this a glorified road kill.

This is how this stuff starts. "He said, she said".

Here's the facts as we know it:

1) Guy shoots a huge non-typ buck in Kansas with a bow, and legally checks it.

2) Local newspaper researches the story, and publishes what you see above.

3) You claim you got information "direct from the horses mouth" that this buck was sick and nothing more than a glorified road kill.

4) I call you on it, and ask you who you talked to.

5) You fess up that it wasn't "direct from the horses mouth", which would indicate you'd talked to the hunter, but rather you talked to a neighbor who gave you his third-person account of the story.

Give it some time. If it really isn't legit, it will come to light, especially if this buck threatens to break the non-typ record in Kansas. However, every time a big buck like this gets killed, these same kind of rumors pop up. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's not.

KC Griz,
Thanks for the pics of the 2 deer, I am sorry for getting off track on your post. Leavenworth county has some of the best deer habitat in the country and these are two prime examples of the deer there.

MOC,
I am standing behind what I said earlier, I believe I can come up with a pic of the wound with all of the maggots crawling out. If I come up with that pic I will send them to you. I don't like to take part in these exchanges but calling me a liar is a surefire way to fire up this country boy from Missouri. The ball is in my court on the pics I will see what I can do.

I don't know what the real story will turn out to be on that non-typical, but from the picture something could have been wrong with him. Most bucks have a much larger neck than that mid-October here in Kansas. Either way looks like one crazy rack on his head!

I would hope they'd have a bigger neck than that. I think that's the cape. Could be wrong, though...hard to tell in that photo.

Now that I look at it, could be the cape. I thought the white in the back was the under-belly hair. I'll confess I was a little focused on the head gear though!! :)
