Here's a question for all:

Let;s say you bought a bow from a friend, who bought it off Archerytalk. You were shooting it, and noticed the lower limb was splintered. It wasn't like that yesterday. You look closer and it was painted over beforehand, indicating the damage was done and someone knew about it, and tried to hide it and ditch the bow (which worked). I looked the thing over pretty thoroughly, and never noticed the green paint that is now noticeable all over the riser.

Doing a little check-up on here shows that the bow was bought by owner #1, sold to #2, sold to #3 on ArcheryTalk, #4 on here again, #5 A.T. once more, and then finally to myself outside of A.T.

I had this bow apart and lubed/checked it over before buying it and never noticed anything, so it was hidden pretty good. Also, unmistakenly deliberate. I thought I checked it over good, but apparently my standards just went through the roof!

Obviously no warranty, New limbs going to be at Least $100.

No clue which of the 5 guys before me did it.

What would you do/could you do?

You have no way of knowing for sure which one of the 5

Don't buy used stuff from someone you don't know without seeing it first, that's my opinion any way.

What can you do, pretty much nothing but eat the cost. That is the down side of buying used stuff.

At least you didn't do what I did when I was younger. I bought a car with a blown engine that I was told had a timing issue and would be easy to fix. I don't think the guy knew the engine was wasted, but can't say for sure. And since it was used there really wasn't much I could do, other than get another engine for it.

Sometimes that's how it goes. If you want a waranty get it new I guess.

Did you get a good deal on the bow at least? I wouldn't pay more than a hundred bucks, if that for a bow that had that many owners. Just me though. I don't care if it was a $1000 target bow to begin with.

It would have been about $300 US, but of course you don't find out how many owners it had had until you are checking into a different problem.

I understand that there is not really anything a guy can do to fix this, just putting a questiong forth, seeing what everyone else thinks...

I didn't notice you were from Canada either. My post sounded kind of mean, I didn't mean it that way. I was just trying to be to the point.

I am scared to death to buy new stuff of the net, let alone used stuff. There are a few people I would buy from, but that's about it.

Good luck,
Paul

used equpt

sometimes you win and sometimes ya don't, I have bought a lot of equpt off ebay and a used bow off AT from pinshooter, and it was a great price and its a great bow, he was a honest seller. You take a chance buing any thing that's used but that still beats paying retail, My outback sells for 699.00 at the Mathews dealer here and I paid 535.00 it was used 2 months to me that is a deal, sure there is no warrenty but what I saved can repair a lot its just a crap shoot, but I think you have a better chanch here on AT then say ebay cuz this seemes to be a close knit of people and a person don't want a gazillion archers mad at him / her at least I don't lol just remember the old saying sold as is and when you assume someting you make a ass out of u and me

Buying used

When you first receive the item. You have to check it throughly.
Then if not happy ask for refund.

I bought a Black Widow, third shot the limb split. Just the chance you take.
I couldnt tell it when I got it and certainly dont think it was done delibertly.

Always a risk buying used.

The savings is worth the risk to me bigtime.

Try to find a set of limbs from members here. Good Luck and it sucks if someone painted over that and didnt say anything about it. But if you do buy a new set your have like new bow and promble still less than the cost of new one.

Paul: I didn't think you were mean at all man. I'm usually to the point too, no BS, and sometimes it comes out wrong. I didn't read into your post any deeper than the wording, so don't worry about it.

Yeah, you're still right, put a set of limbs on it and it's still "relatively" cheap.....

Just a little disappointed as I have bought probably 30-40 items from here and this was the only one that was not in better shape than described. Good bunch of guys in general.

wondering

I was wondering how long this was going to take to surface on AT.

I was owner #2 of the bow in question. I got in a trade with another AT member and checked it out pretty throughly as well as another member here on AT who made a set of string and cables for it.

I had the bow about 2 or so weeks and just decided I wanted something else to play with and I don't think I even shot the bow after drawing it a few times.

I won't mention who I got it from but I would say he is a top notch guy and I think a lot of guys on here would vouch for him.

Like I told Pat I would swear on the good book that I had no knowledge of the limb crack and having anything to do with covering it up.

I'm not going to put blame somewhere but whomever did it knows and they only have to answer to themselves and the big guy.

Double Lung Em:

No need for names bud. I think between the people that had the bow, we have a good idea who it was, and like you said,

"I'm not going to put blame somewhere but whomever did it knows and they only have to answer to themselves and the big guy."

sums it up about perfectly.

I know there is nothing I can do, I knew that before I posted this thread, but now, after I had Pm'ed each person and then posted it public, the culprit knows who they are, and knows that I know. That was my intent.

Like I mentionned, this will not prevent me from dealing on Archerytalk at all. The folks here are generally a good group of people.

Pat,

Keep in mind that if you buy a used set of limbs you may run into a similar problem. It may be that someone has the limbs laying around because they're bad and want to dump them off cheap. Just a heads up.

BTW, what's the bow model, model year and poundage?

It's a 2004 #60 Pro 40 Dually. There is a set of 2003 limbs from a Pro 40 for sale here, I have a PM to the guy asking if they are from a Dually or SC. Gotta wait and see.
