I was experimenting with my mechanical broadheads today. They are the ironhead xp, which uses friction to keep the blades open. I decided to try shooting them in the open position to see how the fly. To my surprise they still shot identical to my field point only they made a full size entry hole. I think I am going to hunt with them like that because I figure 2 big holes is better than a big hole and a small hole. I would like to know if anyone can think of a reason not to hunt with them in open position.

You are lucky. If you shoot fixed broadheads they should fly the same then.

I dunno about the Ironhead, but I shot a shockwave head open one time, and it was the most erratic flight I have ever seen, the arrow hit my fence and shattered. I don't think it's a good idea to shoot mechs in the open position, but that's just me?

Actually, I can't imagine it would hurt a thing.

What ya have now is an ultra low profile fixed blade head that shoots good.
