I'm planning a caribou hunt and was wondering what is the best way to preserve the velvet in the field?

The best way is to get the antlers to a taxidermist or freeze dry company ASAP. No guarantee methods that I am aware of in the field, as the velvet is full of blood. If there were a way to drain the blood out of them, you would be good for awhile. If you are going with an outfitter, they should know what to do with them.

Yes, IMO, freeze drying is the best method for velvet preservation.

Freeze drying is definitely the best method. Challenge is trying to locate a taxidermist that can do that size of antlers. Maybe check before you head out in the field.

Freeze drying works awesome, IF you can find someone with a chamber big enough for antlers that big. I’ve got a small velvet muley that was freeze dried and the velvet looks perfect.
