Considering purchasing a Bowtech Carbon Icon...

I'm still relatively new to the sport, so I don't have much of a background on Bows, and Bow manufacturers, and am still trying to learn things as I go along. A couple of months ago a friend let me shoot their Carbon Icon, and I really, really liked it. Because of that, I'm leaning towards purchasing one later this month.

Is there any other bows out there that are comparable in price and quality that I should look at before purchasing the Icon. I know the Hoyt Powermax is one possibility (having dug through conversations here). I've done quite a bit more research, but I feel like I'm missing other options, as there's so much information out there to dig through.

Thanks for your time and feedback.

I started with a carbon knight which is pretty much same bow.

For a newb it was great and served me well for 2 years.

I dont feel had I started with a flagship bow I would have appreciated the differences.

Carbon will spoil you on weight as its hard to go to a heavy mass weight bow after that.

I say get it if the price is right. $450-500 new in box with RAK would be fair.

Otherwise PSE’s midline bows are awesome and the cast riser models are only slightly heavier in mass weight.

I would not get a used carbon bow from bowtech, we had a bunch of them where the carbon riser just kind of bent over time and the bow is totally worthless when that happens. It was a nice hunting bow and light but there are way better used bows to choose from that are durable and shoot well.

The Carbon Overdrive bows with ODB cams in 70lb had the bent riser issues. The Carbon Icon and Carbon Knight (same bow, Knight renamed to Icon) do not have the ODB cams they are standard binary and had no reported issues with risers.

I shot a Knight for 3 years. It was a good bow, not as tunable as bows with yokes, I did have to do some shimming of the cams to get it to my liking. Otherwise they are fine for anyone just getting into it.

The carbon icon and carbon Knight are not exactly the same bow. They had the same riser but different cam systems. The icon was a better bow in my opinion with the flip disc giving you comfort or performance options. I hunted with the carbon icon for three years. Bow tuned easy and never had any issues with warped risers. My brother-in-law has a carbon Knight. It has a stiffer draw cycle than the Icon but again no riser issues. I would say go for it if you are looking for a light weight hunting bow.

Pretty sure the ones that bent at the shop I go to was the carbon knight ones, why?

Because the first thing I noticed was the cam lean and the fact that I couldn't just yoke tune it out because the cheaper ones don't have yokes. Then once we studied the bows it was obvious that the risers were bent.

Padgett, what would you recommend instead of the Carbon Icon?

The couple of folks I know at the range I go to haven't had any issues with their Carbon Icons that I know of, and they've had them for a while. I'll be chatting with them again tomorrow at the range.

It was so funny, the shop owner of this little bow shop hunted with a carbon knight and it was in his bow case back in the back of the store and he hadn't shot it for months when we had these guys come in with warped risers. There was one used one on the wall to be sold and after confirming the guy with a warped riser then we got the bow off the wall and it was warped and then he got his bow out of the bow case and it was also warped.

They were able to work with bowtech and purchase new bows with some standard credit given by bowtech but they had to pay a good amount of money to get the latest offering. I think it was a sr6 for one of the guys. Bowtech offered them rpm360's as a straight trade.

As these 2020 bows hit the market, the classifieds will be flooded with great deals. Do some more research and keep an eye out for a great deal. If your looking at Bowtech ( which is a great bow) look for some CPXL, Realm, ect

Tough call on telling you what bow to get, there are so many good used hunting bows out there. I personally still hunt with my old bowtech destroyer 350, to me it is a freaking awesome hunting bow being beyond fast and easy to shoot. I put some barnsdale limbs on it which makes it custom and cool. I hunted with it since 2009 with the original limbs even though they peeled. The used bowtechs can have limb issues. I went through around 7 sets of limbs for my bowtech guardian and specialist total over the years but I didn't mind because I enjoyed my shooting with them.

The hoyt and pse and bowtech and elite and matthews upper end hunting bows here in the last 6 years are all pretty solid choices, this time of the year you should be able to go into bow shops and see some trade ins and try a variety and find something you really like. I would suggest getting a bow with a rotating module because having to buy mods sucks. The bows with rotating mods are pse and bowtech out of the ones I mentioned.

Looking to buy new. Would prefer to keep the budget under $700, but should be able to stretch that a little. There's a Sportsman's Warehouse nearby, and a few specialty shops in Vegas that look to have a wide variety of Manufacturers in stock as well.

any xpedition dealers close? they have some excellent mid range bows.... PSE does as well, and the Mathews Tactic looks like a great bow, good speed too with the 7" brace height.... of all the Mathews bows, regardless of price, I would get the tactic. obsession turmoil is another really good option

I started out with a Carbon Knight in 2014. After a couple of seasons I had the strings replaced and it was shooting better than new out of the box. I recently passed it on to my son. My wife has a Carbon Rose that she had set up at the shop and does well with it. I like the light weight for hiking in the hills. I found that depending on the sight and quiver that a side mounted stabilizer helped to hold on target. I'm currently shooting a Quest Thrive.

Yeah I'm on the fence withan Icon, or an Elite Valor. I shot both and the RAK is tempting, but my gut says go with the Aluminum riser. The draw cycles we're comparable, but there's a +1 lb and -1inch difference with the valor.. Errrr!!!
