Crossbow and fixed blade broadheads

I'll be bowhunting with a crossbow this year and I'm seriously thinking about shooting the muzzy original 3 blade broadheads along with a mechanical broadhead so my question is this, after sighting in with field tips will my fixed blade broadheads shoot the same as my field tips? Or would I have to readjust my scope to get my fixed blades to fly true? I'm wanting to be able to switch from field tips over to fixed blade and mechanical broadheads without having to readjust my scope so any help and information would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that your fixed blades will fly close to the same as filed tips, BUT... you should shoot your broadheads of choice to insure that they fly the same as field tips. Many fixed blades do not fly like field tips from some crossbows. Better to be safe than sorry. Most expandables offer a practice head to shoot insuring they fly the same as your field tips.

It's been my experance over the years. Practice with exactly the same thing your going to hunt with. That way there's no suprises. If there's a problem your going to find it. And your 109% sure the arrow you shoot at a deer hits where it's supposed to.

Remember a field tip looks nothing like a broadhead. Why expect them to beheave the same. Just my option but there's zero chance I'm wrong :).

It's unlikely your fixed blade heads will hit exactly the same point of aim as your field tips. It's been my experience that aligning the broadhead blades with the vanes is inconsequential... but sometimes just turning the insert a little can make a difference. If the blades line up with the vanes, so be it... otherwise just shoot it however it flies best. Also, using a difference cock vane can make a difference for the same arrow. The bottom line is that in order to be sure, you're going to have to get out there and shoot your arrows (with the broadheads), take notes, and systematically adjust or cull arrows until you get a bunch that group the way you want them to.

Good luck,

I think if you asked ten different crossbow shooters which broadhead shot the best, you'd get ten different answers. You can search this question all day long and come away more confused than when you started. So far, I've found out that even the "practice" mechanical heads they sell or give you don't shoot the same as the actual mechanicals do. You'll need to get a good broadhead target and start trying some different heads to see which one you get the best results with. Most mechanicals shoot fairly well but not so with the fixed heads. Two different animals.

Try yer broadheads out shoot them at all the ranges to see how they do fer you. You will see how they shoot quickly. I sight my broadheads n then durin the season when i practice i shoot close so the field pt arrows don't stray too far from where i am aimin

You need to talk to Mr Hunlee ! He calls muzzy's "the chosen ones"
Alot of variables in play with your question....what speed you shooting? What total arrow weight? Helical or straight vanes?
I hav only owned one crossbow that will shoot muzzys...its a Middleton 355 ss, I think it will almost shoot a kitchen fork straight....
My other bows are near 400fps and Muzzys are useless now matter what I have tried to make them consistent.

Many guys here report the original RamCats shoot with their field points or extremely close. I shot Black Hornets from Magnus last year and they did shoot with my field points. I have a couple bows that shoot slick tricks to the same point, a couple they are close enough I could hunt out to 40 yards with zero problem. I have a preference for VPA 3 blqades, and usually have to adjust a little for them, but they shoot accurate out to 70 yards.

What others have said should be practiced, make sure they shoot on at every yardage you intend to use them. If you have to madjust a little,, thats quite acceptable to most,,, if they always shoot to the same poi,,,, just adjust for it, or try some different heads till they do. I also think lining vanes with blades is pure coincidence, I've added a brass or stainless collar and made more difference, or tried tightening or slightly less torque to make a big difference... But one thing is for sure, most bows like different tweaks or heads,,, it's up to you to find em!! GOOD LUCK,,,,,:thumbs_up

Not sure which crossbow you are shooting. Most on here will say (and I have found the same to be true) that spine indexed or spine matched arrows are a good way to get your arrow system to perform well. You have the same issues as with a vertcal bow arrow, the head has to spin straight to fly well, the arrows must be consistent, etc. I bought some non-spine indexed Black Eagle Executioners on here and had to tune them by shooting, observing where the broadheads would shoot, turning the arrow and reshooting (recurve with flat nocks makes this easy), remarking and refletching, and now they all shoot with field points out to 50 yards. I've found Ramcats to shoot most like field points, even when dealing with arrows that are not just right for a bow. Slick Tricks are pretty good too, with standards being slightly easier to get right than Magnums, then Grizz is a bit tougher. There are others who have had luck with different heads including the QAD. Your Muzzys may work fine. I had been using Muzzy 100gr. 4 blade with practice blades to start tuning for broadheads. Over many years of shooting different broadheads, I'd say Muzzy's weak point is the ferrule. I have a bunch that have bent furrules that don't spin close to right anymore. Shooting out of a crossbow just accellerates any wear and tear you put on an arrow, IMO.

An interesting thread for me as finding that golden combination of arrow components is none too easy. Especially the broadhead conundrum. To get a relatively good selection of 4 to 5 different broadheads, I could easily spend as much as I did on my bow, depending on the brand. NAPs etc can be as much as €55 for 3!!

I hunt full time from Sept 15th to end of Jan. then hog hunt in Florida the rest of the time.. For me, shooting a semi fast 390 solution, 470 grain arrow at 360 fps. I love my slick tricks, Grizztrick for me. 4 blades and super sharp.. Take it for what its worth.

I am currently shooting original 3 blade muzzys out of my Matrix 350 and out to 40 yartd they are hitting same POI as my field points. The same broadhead and arrow combination shot from my matrix 330 tends to hit about 4" low and slightly right of field point POI. As others have said, you're going to need to shoot those broadheads and compensate accordingly.
