Depends on the thickness of the material. I cut mine 4 to 4 1/1 inches. This makes a loop just long enough to place the release right behind the nock.

It's also going to depend on how much the material you use stretches the first few times you draw on it. I don't precut mine I just take a piece of material and melt the first end and tie it up and get the loop set to the length I want it. Than very carefully I cut the second end fray and melt it right on the bow. I found this to work the best for me being as I prefer a very short loop.
