DIY Archery Target

So I've been trying out targets and these black hole/foam layer targets are great at first, but boy do they wear out fast and the arrows usually poke through 8 inches or so on the back end. I do like how quiet they are and how easy it is the remove the arrow though. The Yellow Jacket stops arrows easily enough but it's a really loud thud and it's hard to see the arrow from a distance.

At our local farm feed store, they sell compressed bales of straw (not hay-- hay is food for your livestock), and it stopped field tip arrows like a champ. It's also pretty quiet, and not as loud as the yellow jacket. It's also easier to remove an arrow vs the yellow jacket, but harder against the foam. The straw bale does leave a mess in the car (definitely bringing a tarp next time).

I shot with a Mathews VXR 31.5 at 60 lbs, 27.5" draw.

At the end of the day, I can put the straw in the compost bin when it wears out. I'm going to test it with fixed and mechanical broadheads and report back.

Round bales work even better. Got my first bow at 15, never even thought about buying a target at the time. Went home and put an old chicken feed bag in front of a round bale and went to town. Some of the best times I ever had. Only downfall was if I ever hit a spot that had gotten wet and molded, lost a handful of arrows that way.

A piece of 4 x 8 foot OSB with a stall matt attached to the front works wonders if you're a good shot and rarely miss the target and most quality arrows will not be damaged if they do penetrate.

If you need some more coverage they make a netting that you can hang behind your target that will stop arrows even from a compound bow, but it is expensive.
