DL and Loops

So I am only a 27.5"DL. Because of this I have never used a loop. The way I figure it, is if you measure out to 27.5 and you use a loop. You need a 27" DL bow order. I am short enough. I want more speed. Most loops I see look like they add at least 1/2 to 5/8" to DL. Am I not correct in this assessment?

The loop does NOT CHANGE THE DRAW-LENGTH one iota...what the loop does change is the positioning of your ANCHOR POINT because you've moved your hand back farther away from the bowstring.

IF you were using a rope around the string release aid...then all you have to do to keep the same anchor and FEEL of the Draw-length is keep the distance of your knuckle from the string the same by adjusting the length of the d-loop to match how your hand positioning is with the rope around the string type of release aid.

We used to fine tune our "drawlength" adjustment by lengthening or shortening the release rope (and it changed the speed of the release slightly too, haha)...same principle...to get that exact positioning for the most solid and repeatable anchor point!

You cannot have a repeatable anchor point if your hand is floating back behind your ear somewhere in space....and this also affects your shooter's triangle and gets you all out of position.

I'd rather take the loss of a few fps and be ACCURATE and repeatable than have those FAST MISSES so common by people that insist on longer drawlengths than they should be shooting all for the sake of almighty SPEED.

But, people are different....it all depends upon whether you want repeatable and reliable ACCURACY...or you want mediocre scores, increase potential for injury, and staying way down in position on the leader boards...for SPEED sakes.

Field is right. It doesn't change DL because technically DL is not measured between your hands, but from your bow hand to a point on your face. And I'm sure you can see that a 3" loop isn't going to change this at all. It will, however, move your anchor point farther back. To remedy the change, just shorten your release. Most today are length adjustable, even the $20 ones, and it's just that simple. Plus a piece of rope weighs less than one or two brass nocks and a couple of eliminator buttons, so it would be a tad faster actually.

BTW, I have two friends shooting shorter DLs that you (27" and 26") and they won't be giving up their loops any time soon. Just too many little advantages people don't want to give up.
I guess I am slow sometimes. We all have a comfort anchor, if you will. The farther the string is pulled back away from the bow the more length it has to add speed. I already keep my release shortened. I have my anchor point. I am now getting the string on draw, closer to the bow with loop. This shortens the length of time the arrow is on the string. However, I do get the benefits of using a loop for consistency.
As the above posters correctly stated, Your 27.5 inch draw bow is still a 27.5 inch bow after you add the loop. The power stroke hasn't changed. But to you (the archer) it feels like it's longer because you now have to anchor farther back. If you want to add a loop AND maintain your current anchor point, then you are correct, you have to shorten your draw length up to do that.

Isnt that what it is about. Why not just get a 30" and use the back of your ear for a anchor point. Bottom line is you have to either compromise your draw length or anchor pt to use a loop. THAT IS WHAT I DO NOT LIKE. However, you all give sound reasoning for consistancy and I know I want a loop. Just not wanting to stretch myself out any further for anchor pt. That is not going to help my consistency. Sounds like I am down to 27". Have they got a 400FPS bow yet to get me at 300fps with a 380plus hunting arrow without a 6" bH. Thanks, I will probably order a 27"DL

That is not true. I don't compromise either one. And my DL is only 1/2" longer than yours. I do use a release that is nice and short to make up the loop length. No problem, I love the release. Shot bunches of 300s with it and killed several deer and turkeys with it.

How short do you currently have your release set up? Still triggering with your fingertip? Some releases just are not ideal for loops unless the shooter has big ol' gorilla paws. And if your DL is 27.5" you probably don't have gorilla paws.

Scott,
I'm also a 27" draw. There are plenty of releases that are Dloop friendy with a trigger forward close to the hook. I am using the Carter quickie series. If you use the thinner dloop material you can get a pretty short dloop maybe even less than a 1/2". The best way to shoot a index finger release is from the first joint not the finger tip. If you are shooting from the tip(which almost every archery coach reccomends against) you can gain a 1/2" right there.
The d loop has alot of benefits. Give it a Try and good luck.

I doubt incorrect draw length is going to help your consistancy either, shorten your release and leave your draw lenght where it's suppose to be.

I like the trigger forward release concept. Thanks, I will look into the Carter quickie series
