We know some people who dont use it, are in tree stands and have had luck getting a few deer.

Does anyone know about the scent products if they really do work?
And if the deer even care or can still smell if you have the scent products on?
Does it matter if you have some on if your in a tree stand?
If it is a must, what brand is a good brand? I have heard Scent Away was good..

I really just want to see everyone opinions, what research they have done and personal stories.

Thanks for all your information! :)

Good post here I have had success using wildlife research but have tried a new product this year called lethal they have a full line of products and I'm totally impressed as I have watched young and old does feed were I have walked in and never act sketchy at all and I have had several young bucks come in directly downwind of me at 4 yards of me and mill around that to me is effective.good luck

I have used DDW wih success along with Scent Away. I used Lethal last year with great success but can not find it locally. The Tinks bio stuff works as well. I know I can not eliminate all my scent but have seen more deer since I got serious about scent control.

Most work. They were originally developed for the pet industry for eliminating odors. I use Scent-a-Way products myself. Two weeks ago, I had three coyotes go right by my stand. The first one came from down wind, surprised he didn't smell me.

He most likely did.... he just most likely didn't LOCATE you. Big difference.

They work to an extent, mature deer down wind from you will pick you off 9 times outta 10 more than likely. I use scent killer gold and play the wind.
I've had 2 year old bucks wind me and could care less, where I've seem 4-5 year old bucks wind me a hundred yards away and bolt like they saw the devil himself. They didn't become mature by being dumb. Seems like your much more likely to get busted by (scented) by a doe than a young buck....jmo

Scent eliminating products will work to reduce your smell but will not eliminate it.
Now the amount is for for debate. I believe it is like pissing on a wild fire. Sure every little bit helps but doesn't do a tremendous amount. I believe you have to play the wind . Deer smell things multiple times over then we do. .
I just watched a show and they said a Bear can't smell 7 times more than a blood hound. I don't think you are going to out spray away smell enough to fool a blood hound.
A human sence of smell is ridiculously lousy compared to most animals. This why I think people think you can eliminate or cover up smell.

Fact is you will never be 100% scent free. Just minimize your scent with unscented detergent {no UV brighteners} and wear scent control base layers and always hunt from downwind when you can. I've had does within 10 feet {hunting from the ground}, directly down wind,... sometimes the bolt,... sometimes they don't. Movement will bust you every time.
I do use Juniper branches to beat the heck out of my camo for cover scent..... seems to work.

I honestly can't tell a difference. I have about the same luck with it and without it. Playing the wind is usually your best bet.

Depends on what your definition of "work" is. Does any product eliminate human odor? Absolutely not. Does some products reduce human odor? Probably. What the real question is this: does a reduction in human odor serve to not alarm deer? My answer is no, it does not. The deers nose is beyond anyone comprehension. From a track of a doe made 8 hours ago, a buck can tell what doe it is, what direction she was going, whether she's in heat or not, etc. etc. the deer are going to smell you no matter what you do - there is zero way around that fact.

Look at it this way. A deers nose is many, many more times powerful than a dog. A dog trained to do so can detect 1 drop of kerosene in a 5 acre field....every time, like child's play. The same dog can detect 1 gram of meth hidden inside a car tire. Etc, etc, etc. if a deers nose is hundreds of times better than a dog, can you image what a deer actually smells? Over half its brain is dedicated to scent detection.

Its not reasonable to think we can spray down with an advertised scent spray and go where we want, hunt whatever wind we want or even to reduce out scent to any level that a deer won't detect us. If a deer smells a human, any human scent (no matter how reduced) they will be alerted. Period.

I used to be a scent reduction freak. Quit cold turkey a couple years ago - Zero reduction in success on killing mature deer.

Straight forward and good advice.

I feel Carbonblast works excellent! About 10 or 12 yrs ago it was raining somewhat. I set my shirts on the headache rack in the truck to dry off. After waking up from a nap, I noticed the wind had came up. If blew my main short over a tank of gas. You could smell the fumes from the vent hole and the shirt smelled way strong. I laid it out and sprayed the heck out of it with Carbon blast. The order seriously disappeared. The following morning I had a bull downwind for a while at 30-40 yards and he never seemed to notice. I feel this product worked great.

I will say this....

Use anything that gives you confidence to stay on stand

That being said, I used to be a scent control freak...washed everything in scent killer soap, stored in special containers, dressed in the field, wiped down and sprayed while on stand, used scent lock clothing, ect

I don't do much of any of that any more and have not noticed much of a difference in deer sighting and success

I use regular scent away spray religiously and wear a scent blocker suit. I walk out my back door across the back porch where the outside kitty cats eat, through the back fenced in yard where the dogs pee and poop, then spray my boots down very well, I can walk to the feeder and make it manually sling corn and climb into my stand 25 yards away and the deer never wind me. My stand is only 15' to the seat. They walk upwind, downwind, morning or evening across my tracks and only rarely even "think" they smell me.

Maybe these products don't work for everyone, but I'm a believer.

Yes scent control body soaps, detergents, and sprays do work. Scent control clothing works too. Attention to detail using these products along with reasonable care to control contamination has resulted in deer coming into my tree stand from downwind. Does not get much better than that.

OK....lol great answers! This has actually helped ALOT!! Sounds like the products work but not for deers senses. maybe going on a date then. ;)

Now I have one more question... What is up with the deer seeing UV on you?

Is this something real? I always see on commercials with a picture of a guy with uv killers and without uv killers and say the deer can see UV.
Anyway around this?
