Does this stuff go bad over time?

I just made some new arrows today and I noticed that this stuff is having a hard time drying...

Yes, any glue has a shelf life which lessens once opened. Some recommend keeping any “super glues” in the fridge…For the price of a glue bottle and the aggravation of vanes falling off I start with a fresh bottle when I start a fletch job.

If it goes solid, then it is bad, otherwise it will work. I keep it in the fridge to ensure longevity.

I've had the same problem, and where it will work, I don't think it sticks as good when it gets like that so I toss it at that point

Loctite Ultra Gel Control works well. Use it carefully/sparingly though since excess will dry that ugly white chalk color.

I’ve had good luck with blue cap gorilla glue. The loctite I feel is a little too runny and can make a bit of a mess. The gorilla glue is slightly thicker. 3 or 4 drops on vane base and spread with a toothpick.

Yep. Any cyanoacrylate adhesive has a shelf life. Proper handling procedures can extend that life but it does stop working.

Additional to what else has been posted, I would add that my glue tends to harden at some point too, so I usually only buy the small containers.

Gorilla glue gel is all I use for vanes.

I bought a 2 oz bottle that I kept in the refrigerator for several years and it worked great. Vanes suddenly started flying off so I pitched it.

Yes it goes bad. Learned over the years that when a manufacturer says a one year shelf life, they mean it. I once did two dozen arrows with AAE max bond that was over a year old. You guessed it, vanes were flying off the shelf and I had to refletch all of them. The cost of a new bottle is nothing compared to the frustration of vanes falling off. In fact I will only buy the glue directly from AAE to assure its within the shelf life.

Those that say it works until it get hard simply are misinforming you. It goes bad well before then.

I agree with most, it does lessen it's adhesive ability as time goes on. I buy the loctite gell blue cap because it is cheaper and only use a fresh bottle for my arrows, use the old stuff for everyday fixes around the house.

As said already, yes, buy small, use it quick. If time passes it will fail you at some point guaranteed.

Funny the timing of this question, I just finished gluing vanes on a half dozen last week. Used on old (at least 2 years old) small bottle of Loctite Ultra Control Gel super glue which I have used for years with no issues until now! That old glue did not work, been shedding vanes each time I shoot.

To help preserve super glue for a while, find a jar with a good lid and put a fair amount of white rice in it. After you have opened your super glue and finished using it push it into the rice and put a paper towel on top, put the lid on and put it in the fridge.

Like noted above, yes, glues can go bad, but stored in cool darkness they can last years. I store mine in the refrigerator. I use Bohning Platinum and the tube I'm using now has to going 3 years old and works great.

Drying or sticking? Two different things. Arrow prep is paramount, and you noted new arrows.

Playing around, I glued used vanes to a shaft and they stuck good. You can see some of the old glue I couldn't get off without tearing up the base. 20 yards and about a dozen shots and no issues.....

I have never looked at the date. If it comes out I use it. I know I using insert glue that's 3 years old or older in my new GT's and they are staying in fine.
