I got tired of hunting shows about 10 years ago and at the time the YouTube shows were a breath of fresh air. Bowhunt or Die, for example, was just a collection of guys going out on hunts. I started watching Bowhunt or Die when they were just a Roku app. They may have had light sponsors or affiliates but it wasn't pushed and they all had day jobs.
It didn't take long for the YouTube shows to turn into what the Outdoor Channel shows were. Mathews, Lancaster Archery and Tethrd now control that show and if they still have day jobs I don't know how they keep them.
I loved Dudley. He presented excellent teaching and good hunts. When he started slapping Nock On on everything his teaching got less and he started getting a little old man get off my lawn.
When Chris Bee started out and was a Hoyt shooter he had a lot of content in target archery and filmed hunts. When he went to Mathews he shot a few 3Ds and phased that out. When Ultra View kicked in and he got in with the booked hunting company, he turned into a big commercial as well.
Up until recently Cam Hanes kept his day job and to me stayed down to earth. Yeah he was sponsored by Hoyt and Under Armor, Origin, etc but I wonder how he will be now that he no longer has a day job.
I get it, it's how these guys make a living but if they want to keep making a living doing this they need to find some type of balance. It started with DVDs/VHS tapes and then went to Outdoor Channel, then YouTube/Instagram. Each one seemed to be like building a stove fire with pine - it catches quick, burns hot, but burns out fast. I wonder what medium is coming that makes YouTube obsolete and catches fire.
