My favorite elk boots are Zamberlan Dakota's, the 7" high version, but I also have the 10". Unfortunately they discontinued these. If I had to start from scratch today I'd look at the Zamberlan Lynx or some of the newer Crispi offerings.
I have the 960 guides. Uninsulated, and I've used them all summer for training hikes. They are almost broke in. Had no issues but you need to hurry and get them to break em in. It takes a lot of loaded miles before they "give" any around the ankle and you can actually lace them tight. Tough ass boots.
