A friend of mine has 6 raccoons living in his roof and he wants me to get rid of them. The house is an old solid stone building with thick walls and a complicated roof construction.
The part where the raccoons live is inaccessible without removing roof tiles and insulation.
We know where they come out every night so we wanted to bait them. We put some tuna, veggies and marshmallows on a tray on a small projecting roof nearby.
Despite making a lot of noise when discovering the food at the first evening, they haven't touched anything since. He has put out fresh food for 3 days now and they completely ignore it.
My first though was that they might have a better source of food, but the next house is at least 300 yrds away.
The temperatures are currently in the mid 40's at daytime and freezing at night.
Why would they ignore the food?

Maybe they didn't feel safe....hard saying. I did read that using fly killer will kill a raccoon in very short order. Like seconds if I understand correctly. This is probably also illegal depending on your jurisdiction. Obviously this has risks (pets, non target animals).

mix about 1 cup of Golden Malrin fly killer and 2 or 3 cups of cola (coke, pepsi, or cheap brand) into a container and put it at least 10 yards from their hole. They will be dead within 5 yards after drinking it.

Plain old dry dog food is a fantastic raccoon bait. Get a big have a heart trap and catch him and relocate them.

Holy crap! $40 for a 1lb container? What on earth are they smoking? When I saw it I was thinking......$40 is too much for the 5lb'er......then I saw it was only the 1lb'er. Wow.

Your local farm and home store should have the Malrin for like $8. I've found that grape soda works the best. Just pour a cup full of Malrin in a pie plate (or whatever container) and pour plenty of soda in. Stir it with a stick. They will be dead.

If ur gonna use the fly bait,dig a hole first ur gonna need it.i turned a buddy onto that stuff first night he had 13 dead ***** within 20 yards of the bait,one died with its face right in it

I can't imagine using poison, then the ***** die in a place that's not accessible.

My buddy evicted some raccoons by putting a radio in the attic tuned to a political talk radio show. They promptly left the first night and he repaired their entry point.

Poison may work but its a bit risky. Put it too close to the house where you're more likely to kill just the ***** and you risk them dying in an inaccessible part of the roof. Put it far enough way from the house where they won't make it back before they die and you risk killing more non target animals. I'd probably try to live trap them and then relocate. If you really want them dead then maybe bait a live trap with the soda/poison mix and put it close to their entry point to the house. Less chance of killing non target animals and if the ***** do go in to take the poison the trap will close behind them preventing them from getting back into the house before they die. Down side to this is you'll have to reset the trap multiple nights to take care of all of them and they might become educated to your plan.

best thing ive heard of, and again probably illegal and very risky if any pets are in the area, but mix antifreeze with mountain dew and put a couple eggs in there. guy told me they are all dead within 10 yards of the bowl.

All I know about evicting raccoons is that hiring a teenager for $50 worked very well. (I would've likely thrown up getting the dead one out from under the house.)

I don't know from experience but have read that simply putting a light in the area where they are bedding will cause them to leave.

I dont think raccoons dying under the tile roof would be ideal so I'd skip the poison idea. After reading this the birds that make their way under mine don't seem as bad.

Is it really that fast? I have a few ***** trying to get to my chickens and they wont go in traps either.'

Not sure I could pet proof it from my dogs though, so not really an option for me. Just interesting that they would die so fast.

Have spoken with a pest removal specialist. He has different go-to baits for different animals. For trapping raccoons in live traps, he says nothing beats a honey bun.
I have used them and always been successful trapping these guys in short order with Little Debbie honey buns.
