Field archery is a Grind

Field just gives me a royal case of target panic. My pin is either allergic to that black dot or there are evil forces at work that won't let my pin sit on that dot. I don't have that problem in 3D. I'm leaning more toward the evil forces explaination right now.

It's target archery. The closer to the center, the higher the score. It's too difficult of a concept for some to grasp but that's how it is.

"They are willing to shoot SMALLER animals on novelty up to 100 yards and laugh like crazy when they miss completely...and shoot another shot....but they are not willing to shoot ONE shot per half at MARKED DISTANCE at a target that is nearly 30" in diameter?????

If they can't hit the field TARGET at 50 yards, 40 yards and in...then they sure as heck ain't for hitting the 3-D's very effectively either."

This pretty much sums it up.
Wrong wrong wrong. I might be able to hit a 3D animal at 100 yds cause my pin will sit there. I guarantee you it won't sit there on a black dot at 100 yds.

I think its partly because like Spot shooting, field archery quickly shows who is a good archer with repeatable form and consistency. In 3d there is a hundred excesses to cover up a bad shot or archer. The wind, the shadow, sunspot, wind, twig that deflected my arrow, misestimates of yardage, looked at the wrong pin, my draws where riding up my _____ and so on.

People get frustrated quickly when they can't rationalize away the bad shots. Which leave us with the simple fact that a lot of archer/hunters are lazy as hell and don’t want to work to get better, they want their instant gratification or else its to hard and not fun.

I've played golf for 15 years I still sux but I love the game and practice as much as time will allow, i'll never be Tiger, but hell I still have fun.

Ok, i've spent enough time on this soap box, time to find another, lol:wink:
Another opinion that I think is wrong.
Some of us out there CAN shoot 3D reasonably well and don't need to make excuses. We can hit the ten ring and get our fair share of 11s too. Heck two years ago I was 3 points away from making the final cut at Snowshoe in MBO. I CAN shoot a bow decently well. I aint a Hopkins but just because I suck at field don't mean I can't shoot. I'm sure there are others out there just like me so don't tell me we all can't shoot.

No, you cant shoot. In 3d you just need to be able to guess at yardage good. Please, shooting one arrow and getting lucky doesnt make you a good shot. Shoot 4 arrows at 65 yds and put them in the X and I'll say your good. Shooting an animal at 100 yards has given many hunters the desire to shoot at a real animal at a 100 plus yards. I hear more and more stories every year. I have respect for the 3D pros because they have proven that they can compete with the target pros as some have won in Vegas.
So break out the popcorn because this is going to get good.
I've always said I'd rather be lucky than good. I got a case full of trophies to show how lucky I've been. I guess by your responce you are one of the unlucky at 3D? Gee that's too bad. Better luck next time right?

My answer to the which is harder question:

3D: in a national or international match no one has (to the best of my knowledge) ever shot a 440 in IBO or 480 in ASA on a 40 target course.

Field:560s get shot all the time. Jessie B. just shot one at Greencastle two weeks ago. It's quite common.

Slash I'll have to try that ring around the dot thing. I shoot a Xview indoors but I cant get it to work very well on a field course cause the size of target faces in the scope keep changing from target to target.

To my knowledge there have been only four 560 Hunter rounds ever shot at the NFAA Outdoor Nationals and NO 560 Field round has ever been shot.

Then come to Cumberland Maryland on July 15 & 16 and you can watch Jessie shoot another one. He's done a couple of em at our club so far. Cumberland is his own backyard so I would imagine he'll have his "A" game with him.

That is great, awesome shooting and congrats to Jesse! However, it doesn't change the fact that he is still only the fourth person to ever shoot a 560 on the hunter round, or the fact that NO ONE has ever shot a perfect Field round.
That was a field round I believe. Someone who shot the Cancer Memorial shoot either confirm or deny please. Correct me please if I'm wrong.

In any case a 560 is still a 560 in my book. That is still alot closer than anyone has ever gotten to cleaning a IBO or ASA course.

So now 560s don't really count outside of South Dakota even though all the distances are all the same?

3D aint the same course everyday so that's why I was limiting 3D to national events. Someone at a local club could set a 40 target course of all elk at 20 yards and maybe get all 11s on that. Of course you wont see anything like that at a national event.

Field courses are set things at known distances and all courses are basically the same except maybe for wind and lighting.

I shoot 3-D and field archery. There is definately a difference between the two but shooting is shooting. If you have form flaws, their going to show up no matter what kind of shoot your at. I was at the mids this past weekend and shot so so but there was a kid there that shot close enough to a 560 in field. He shot a 555. Impressed the crap out of me and my husband. very young too. I also do agree that here in the north east shooters are either disappearing or giving up. When I shoot, I shoot in the hunter freestyle class and there are very very few woman that shoot that class. They all shoot freestyle unlimited. All the negative talk only makes this sport go down hill. It turns people off to want to hear about all the B/S that goes with the game. A shooter is a good as they want to be......
I believe that 555 was from Chris Johnson. Another Tuscarora archer. Known here as yamahagrizzz660.

Yes It was Punch......Hats off to him...Awesome Shooting...My husband shot w/ him at the Mids..........:darkbeer:
He's every bit as good shooting 3D too. He's kicked my butt to the curb many times.

Hey punchy,
PM me and I'll direct you to a website to show what kind of scores I can post in 3D. JB is a great shooter. Was his 560 on a half field and half hunter course? Because several have done that.
I couldn't tell you. I shot 3D that day at Greencastle. I only know his score. To me it's all the same. 560 is a 560. Dont matter to me where, or how many others shot in his class. He still cleaned the course and that's all I need to know.

Why does it always come down to "field OR 3D", instead of "field AND 3D"?
Believe me, if I could shoot both I would but since I stink at field and shoot a fair 3D game field just aint as much fun for me.
