I Would Like Some Suggestions On What To Plant In My Food Plots. I Live In The South And We Normally Plant A Mixture Of Oats, Wheat And Ryegrass. I Have Looked At The Various Types Of Other Seeds Such As Biologic Etc. But I Am Unsure Of The Expense. Are These Specialized Mixtures Worth It?

Try any of the brassica mixes. They work very well for hunting plots. Some the mixtures aren't to bad price wise. I planted some as an expiement in one of my plots and was amazed by the grow in the matter of a month. These mixes do work, but what you plant depends what you want to accomplish. For hunting I would use brassicas, but for longterm use I like tecomate, and the bio-logic perreniels. I've tried several the last few years and these worked the best for me.

Check your local seed/feed mill if you have one in your area. They will have seed at a fraction of the price. My local mill had a pre-mix of several different clovers, chicory, rapeseed, rye grain and turnip. Even through this major summer drought we are having, my plots are miraculously makig it.

Here's a picture of one of the old logging roads on my property where I planted the mixture. The turnips are getting huge.

That is the exact mixture that I have used for the last two years, only problem is I have a real problem with Johnson Grass that I need to kill this winter. I also did a spring plot with sping oats and had 8 bucks earlier in the summer in it every night for a week. I used to think there were not many deer in my area, I did a Google Earth search around my farm and found out there was hardly any other crops around. So I started these food plots (about 10 acres in all). It's paying off we came home late the other night and there must have been 50 deer in the fields, can't wait for season.

Trooper, I live in the South as well and I have had great luck mixing Imperial Whitetail Clover with wheat and oats in the Fall. I mow the plots in the Spring and the clover takes over and has done well in the summer. The following Fall I seed over the top of the clover in September with the wheat and oats. I can usually get two years from the clover before the weeds take over. Then I spray out the plots with Round-up and start over. If I could get down to where I hunt more often I would do things differently but it has worked so far only getting down there two to three times a year before the season starts.

Trooper check Walmart they usually have smaller bags of Biologic. You can plant strips in your plots and see what your deer prefer.I like to add several differant seeds too.It gives your plot a Saladbar effect.
