Hey guys,

me and my good friend have a spot to make a small food plot maybe 30-30yds.
we would like to attract deer and turks, what should we plant?
we would like something that will really attract them in not just the usaul clover patch.
there is a little water source near by and a brush lot about 70yds away.
we live in lower NY state so we will stop having frosts by the middle of may hopefully.
in the summer it can hit around 90 degree although our average is probably 74 degrees.
we will have a good amount of sun hitting the plot.
So what do you guys recommend?
when should we plant what you recommend?
thanks a lot guys!
Greg

Do an annual for a few years (corn, chicory, etc.) and get the soil worked up. Then, I'd move to a perrenial (clover).
I don't want to do corn because the coons would take it out in one or two days.
I am not familiar with the chicory-what is it?
the dirst shouls be pretty good besides a few rocks.
The spot is in the woods so the dirt is pretty rich i'm sure.

If you are planting back in the woods, I would be mindful of shade. 30yds isn't a big square to carve out and it will probably get a lot of shade once the leaves pop. Be sure to look for a shade tolerant crop. You can probably do well with some of the Biologic type stuff for shade. Plus a lot of that stuff really gets hit hard after the first frost which is right around the first of the season.

I just planted clover this week! Last year I planted clover and chicory in another spot. Shot a nice buck in the plot.

I live in the twin tiers. Give brassica a shot.

Go to this site

http://www.preferredseed.com/

and find a dealer or give them a call and ask for Jason he will tell you where the nearest dealer is.

This is top notch seed and these guys will really take care of you.

Brassica is an annual so you will have to plant it every year but after the first hard frost during bow the deer will start to hammer it. Thats when the starch turns to sugar.

Last year i went and roughed up the ground with a rake and threw some of this out with some calcium coated ammonium nitrate and had great results. You want to give it a good shot of nitrogen when you plant (about 70lbs of nitrogen to the acre). And you don't want to seed it heavy (about 6lbs to the acre). Plant it in the first or second week of July.

Here is a photo of what came up for me last year along with a couple rubs about 20 yards from my plot.

This is my first year too!
If I had 1/2 of an acre.
Would a clover plot work?
Then till it back up in the fall and plant some Turnips, Brassicas and chicory?
