G5 Mega Meat vs Dead Meat

I’m looking for a broad head that would perform best under a less than ideal shot placement on a whitetail. My current setup is a 440gr arrow traveling roughly 265/270fps so I believe my kinetic energy is somewhere between 65-70. It looks like the difference between these two broad heads is 1.5” cutting diameter vs 2” cutting diameter. I assume there will be better penetration with the 1.5” diameter head but cut less area in the process. Which would be my best option or is it as broad as it is long? Are there any other broad heads that are a better option?

The ferrules are the same. The blades are the same thickness. It's really just what you value more. Deadmeat blades will hold up better in bone because they are shorter. Megameat will cut more in soft tissue. So are you worried more about being too far forward or too far back? Shoulder vs guts. They are both good choices in the mechanical realm. "Better" is very subjective.

I think they are top shelf along with a few others. Grim Reaper, Wasp and Sevr I like for mechanicals. You really get into splitting hairs and trading this for that. All comes down to what you value more.

There are a few I like the looks of but have no firsthand experience with. B3 has a RD2 out now that looks good. Trifecta has a pop and lock rear deploy that looks good. Rek has a HXP that is something crazy like 2.3" cut. I also have the G5 T2 but haven't shot anything with it yet.

Both are a good choice. If I didn’t shoot the deadmeat I’d be looking at sevr and grim reaper. One reason I really like the deadmeat/mega meat is the ease of maintenance and replacement of parts. I like a rear deploying broadhead. It’s cut on contact so if it for some reason it didn’t open, you still have a 1” hole. You don’t have to worry about rubber bands breaking or dry rotting and not springs. Each pack comes with a practice point so you don’t have to shoot your actual broadhead into a target.

I use MegaMeats and DeadMeats pretty much interchangeably. I'm colorblind so I want as much blood on the ground as soon as possible.

The Deadmeats definitely penetrate better, but the MegaMeats leave a nasty hole. I had some non exits w/ the MegaMeats and I'm at 70lbs w/ a 480 grain arrows at around 283 fps. That's a good bit of energy.

I had the same experience with the Mega Meat on a similar bow and arrow setup.

Deadmeat and Megameat ......use the Same Ferrel......you can interchange the blades between the two......... you can match the blade length to your game
Just to clarify the Deadmeat V2 ferrule is same as the Megameat. The original Deadmeat is different and won't work with the Megameat blades from what I researched.

I’ve shot both the Mega’s and regular Dead Meats and both open predictably. Picture perfect entry holes every time.

That said, I’ve gotten much better penetration with the regular dead meats. The difference in diameter seems minor, and bigger holes always better. However, the dead meats have better pass through on big body deer. I’ll give up some diameter to get a pass through.

I’ll qualify all this by noting I’m short! Shooting these heads out of a Mathews VX, 27”, 70#’s, ~285fps, 385gr arrow so your mileage may vary.

Don't understand the lack of pass thrus personally. I shoot 65 lbs, 29.5", 440 gr arrow and and every mature buck I've shot with a megmeat has blown through and buried in the dirt. That includes super steep angled shots and quartering away out to 38 yards, great blood trails and short tracking jobs on everything. I think a lot of it has to do with a stiff arrow and bow/arrow set up thats perfectly tuned.

Not concerned about shooting one of the little NC deer we have with a mega meat, even a big buck is under 200 lbs and thin skinned. Midwest deer are another animal all together, think I’ll stick to dead meat on larger animals. Mega meat blades are long and bend easy similar to the rage 2.3 inchers I shot a few deer with years ago, bent blades may or may not matter though.

I shot the megameat last season, and it was devastating. Even with a less-than-ideal placement, this one went in a circle for a total of maybe 30 yards and fell about 10 feet from my ground blind. Took two breaths and was a goner. The blood trail I can only describe as someone walking with a bucket and pouring a trail behind him.

The head was destroyed, completely came apart, and it was not a passthrough, so it was a one and done. The entrance wound was unbelievable. He was quartering away, a tad uphill, and it was a lung/heart shot.
