i don't understand how people gain 20ish fps with new strings. i saw a post (I will exclude listing specific companies) where someone changed from a highly reputable brand to a smaller brand and gained 20+ fps. it just seems hard to believe unless the previous strings were very wore out. someone help me make sense of it?

Usually it's due to strings being stretched out. Personally, and I'm pretty sure I know the post your referring to, so I'll go on that assumption, I've shot both brands. Never had a good set from the "reputable" company, and never had a bad set yet (15 of them so far between myself and customers) from the smaller company. Some of this could be because of materials used, but in all honesty, I really believe it's due to the old ones being worn out. Again, I haven't had good luck at all with the bigger G company, but I wont say they're inferior or shoot slower. I will say the quality and craftsmanship of the smaller A company is definitely better than what I've gotten from the bigger company.

Not in your head, bow feels better / crisper. Stretch happens over time just like a brake pulsation on your vehicle, you get used to it but someone new sees/feels it immediately. Plus the bow is usually put back to spec and or a couple extra (intended or not) cable twists gets you a few more FPS Speed should not be the main reason to swap out strings, just a happy biproduct of a well made set, from good materials installed correctly.

this is the only scenario I can think of where you pick up speed...

the old strings stretched and dropped poundage and folks shooting them didn't keep up with maintaining the bow and putting in twists in to keep the bow in spec.

new strings get put on, now the bow is in spec because everything is checked and setup correctly, or sometimes they overdue it and put more twists in than they should to go over the expected draw weight.

20fps sounds like an extreme circumstance that isn't possible but I guess anything is possible but it's not because of the new string/cables. They are all made from similar materials for the most part, so there's no magic in new ones to gain speed.... it's just tune / draw weight / crappy chronograph

If the bow was way out of tune and the strings were stretched out you could possibly gain that, but that would be an outlier. Gaining 5-10 fps over a worn-out and stretched string isn't out of the question though. I know the post you're referring to, and can't say enough good things about the "smaller" company and the quality of its product.

I saw that post as well, and thought that speed increase seemed outlandish. Maybe there's some speed difference between the big box stores strings made from BCY (or similar) and the small company using Bloodline fiber (what they are kinda known for), but 20 fps doesn't sound right.

Not sure about fps gain but even a good quality mass produced string is not like getting a real good custom string. I spent years trying all sorts of cheaper strings until i tried a custom string from Addictive Archery. These strings have really
Very little stretch and I think that is where you might pickup a couple fps. No stretch mean you are working the limbs more I would think.

I saw the post on other social media about "gaining 20fps" with a string change.... definitely something else going on with that bow IF there actually was a 20fps gain.

I've heard a lot of guys saying they picked up a few fps with Vec99 (mostly 4-7fps) but I haven't seen it in my testing.

There is a thing called LabRadar and they have archery setting options, there may be others but this is what I know of. If anyone wonders about fps plus or minus just use it and put videos and pics online. All else is speculation really.

I have noticed 3-5 fps when changing strings. Sometimes gained and sometimes lost.

The flow yellow string set I got from Breathn comes in 3 fps slower than the stock grey string did. But what's 3 fps? 3 fps is 1.1% in this case. I bet if I went with natural string color and servings I would gain more than 3 fps back

There ain't no making sense of 20 fps gain.

Years back, here on AT, there was Crackers. He had his methods, maybe few strands, smaller diameter servings. optimum timing. He could coax a few fps more. I believe he's still in business.

Still years back, there Ecellerator strings. These were for single cam bows. Said was a gain of 10 fps and maybe more, BUT there was no serving for around the top wheel. Yep, indeed faster, but worries of wear soon had the Ecellerator strings gone. I don't think the lack of serving agreed with double cam bows.

I've played with different size serving and got less fps with thicker serving and more fps with thinner serving. Also, types of serving material will affect speed.
I usually got a loss and gain that stayed around 2 to 3 fps.

One of t h e string companies is using a strand that is physically lighter than the other string maker.
A little difference can make quite a difference in speed.
Chronograph a string with nock set or shooting loop
then add a peep or silencers. You see the string with the extras will be slower.

So I bought an Evoke 35 pretty sure it had OEM stings on it, restrung it and literally gained 17fps. Thing is it was more like an Evoke 36 with peak draw of #43 with limbs maxed to #60. Other than that….yeah no. If we could pick up 20 with Billy Ray Chesthair’s custom laces we’d all have 20 sets.
