Garmin Software Sharing

I have the Garmin E-Trex Legend C and was going to buy the Mapsource Topo for the U.S. Two of my friends have similar models and I was wondering if the software can be downloaded to any receiver at any time?
I see that they come with download codes, does this mean that you have to link up with the Garmin site to get the OK to download?
