I am 16 years old and have been a compound archer my whole life. I recently decided to give recurves a try so I was wondering what a good starter recurve bow would be.
I am 5' 7'' and have a 26.5 in draw on my compound. I pull about 53' right now pretty easily on my compound. I would like to get a bow under 200 $.
What good bows are there for under 200$ or do I need to spend more for a good bow?
What would be a good poundage for me to get the recurve at?
what kind of arrows will I need?

In addition my sister also would like to get into recurve shooting, she is my size but is pulling 35' with her compound right now. Any suggestions for her?

Will you be hunting with the recurve? If you will be hunting, get a 45 lbs recurve. If only target, then get one that is less draw weight to start.

There are many types of recurve. Olympic competition or Traditional. Decided which type you prefer.

For Traditional Archery, I love the Bear Super Kodiak recurve, but they are around $325 used. If you do get one, get one that are newer version, approximately year 2000 or newer. Super smooth, amazing accuracy.

Draw length does not really matter as much with recurves. They are typically rated for a specific draw length and draw weight. It's just a rating, if your draw length is shorter, the draw weight will be less. If your draw length is longer, the draw weight will be more.

samick sage is a popular entry level bow. it's a takedown recurve. the bow and an extra set of limbs would probably be close to 200. i would suggest getting a light weight set of limbs 30-35# for practice and a heavy set of limbs for hunting. nothing wrong with affordable bows, they perform well for the price.

check out lancaster archery and 3 rivers websites. cabelas has some nice looking store brand bows that might fit your budget too.

I shoot my dad's 1978 Fred Bear Grizzly. 50# right hand. Shoots great. According to Bear archery its price is $379. http://www.beararchery.com/bows/traditional/grizzly ...if I were you I'd shoot different poundages to see what you can handle. Even though its 37 years old I've only had to replace the arrow rest felt pad and the string and it is still in great condition. Last year I purchased a selway quiver and also purchased Gold tip traditional hunter arrows. They look like wood but are actually carbon. Definitely recommend shooting feathers also. I get my feathers from Gateway archery. I also hunt with 125 grain Magnus Stinger buzzcuts. EXTREMELY sharp! Good luck on your decision and have fun shooting.
