Does the bracket have to remain in place, or can it be removed once the stand is strapped to the tree?

It stays in place. You take the yellow nut off the top and slide the yellow bolt piece through a hole on the top bracket of the stand and then tighten the yellow nut back on top.
Would it be possible to strap down the bottom of the stand, then loosen the bracket and slide it down to remove it from the tree?
Think of a hinge.....you strap from the bottom and create a pivot point where the top of the stand can tilt forward. Is that really what you want? The various mount systems from Millennium, Chippewa Wedge-loc, Hawk, etc are designed so the user isn't balancing the bulk of the stand while setting it in place. The smaller and lighter mount is placed first, then the stand is set far easier without trying to hook up a chain or strap. They are designed to leave in place as the primary attachment system. Some reccomend a secondary lower strap to prevent shifting or "kick out", but not as the sole attachment point. Be careful or at least try it a couple feet from ground level.
I have REALLY been dabbling in the hangon arena for about the last 6-8 weeks. I've been looking for either a hangon to compliment my climber or a new climber to replace my climber. Optimally I'd like to use both.
I have bought, sold, returned to store, etc probably 7 or 8 stands in the past couple months. It was very easy to narrow down to Millenium and Hawk for their tree bracket. People won't believe this and I know they have a bad rap sometimes but I prefer the seat on the Hawk and everything overall on the Hawk. It helps if where you buy a Hawk will let you inspect it before you run your debit card. Hawk can be hit or miss.
When you strap that cruzr bracket in tight and put the stand on, even if you add the normal top and bottom strap that come with the stand you're not getting that bracket off without removing the stand. I've been practicing with that bracket most of the summer and when I want to take everything off and go home it's hard to get that bracket to let go with nothing on it.
