im going on a hog hunti in texas in a few weeks and am wondering where the best shot is to shoot them. behind the shoulder and low or neck, quatering away??or all of them. and what do you think would be the best broadhead for them out of thease 3. razor cap, muzzy 3, or wac'ems.

I will aim right behind the elbow joint. If you hit just a little farther back you will hit the guts. All of the hogs vitals are tuck in behind their front shoulder. If you get a quartering away shot that is best, but I have and do take broadside shots on them as well.

As far as broadheads, you are going to get a alot of opinions about them. I personally use a 4 blade muzzy on hogs. JMO, but I like a chisel point, three blade or more broadhead for hogs. It has been my experience that with a cut on contact head, I do not get the hole that I get with a chisel head. Also it is my opinion that 3 to 4 blade heads do better on hogs then 2 blade heads. Hogs have a lot of fat, and the 2 blade "slits" seem to not blade as well as a three or four blade hole.

Good luck, and let us know how is goes!

thanks, so im shooting about 55lb. 28in. allegience, do you think i will get good penetration with a muzzy?? about 400 grain arrows also.-thanks

If you put the arrow where it belongs you will be OK! JMO, but I would not take anything other then a quartering away shot, and stay away from the shoulder.

On the other hand I do not know what kind of KE you are putting out with your setup. My XTect is set at 65lbs, and my hog arrows are 420gr. I am getting right around 63#s of KE with my setup, and have yet to have a problem with any pass throughs.

Good advice given! Take the slightly quartering away shot! It will afford you the best results. I only shoot 60#'s out of OG and 28"DL with 372grain arrows and have achieved full penetration with the G5's and 100-gr. 4-bl. Muzzy's, The Wac'ems would be fine! I am going to Slick Trick one hopefully this wkend. and will try to get the photo's on here ASAP! Best of Luck!

all advice given is 100% accurate. quartering away smash that broadhead right into the opposing shoulder and when the lil piggy starts taking off that arrow becomes an instant blender for the upper cavity.

if you are within 20 yds of the lil squeeler put the arrow right behind the ear (if you are accurate) and he'll drop like a brick! when I am night hunting and can't afford to search all night long I do this every time at my 18 yd. feeder.

thanks for the help, i will probably shoot the first one with a muzzy and if it works great i will just keep using the muzzys.-thanks

Here's some pics I drew where I think good shot placement is and depends on height, angle, etc.

Here is the cut out of a shield on a hog I killed. It is 1.25" thick covered in mud and hard as plywood! The higher you get the more you are in the shield.

thanks for the pictures, that was just the kind of thing i was looking for. Im going to be using goldtip 55/75 xt hunters with blazers. im not sure where, im going with my friend from michigan to our friends ranch in the hill country. im thinking that i would get better penetration with a wac'em, i really liek them and have shot quita few deer and an antelope with them, but they are probably a little week for a hogs shoulder. i like muzzys alot to just dont know about penetration??-thanks

oh ya, i forgot, im also going to be able to hunt axis deer at a different ranch. have any of you shot one of thease guys. For this i think im gonna use a wac'em, just about the size of a mule deer or so arnt they.??-thanks

Jerry's pics are good shots, however I might add that you would want to keep your shots on the low side of the kill zones he posted. The heart is very low in the body cavity.....much lower than you would think.

Also unless you are pushing some serious KE, I would pass on that last shot. Too much armor for my liking (shoulder and shield).

If you go a little lower on that last picture and a little further back, you would have your kill. I've seen pictures of guys that killed 400-500 pound hogs with traditional bows by making that shot.

Dusty and 98.....

Not necessarily so.....remember in my first post I said about heights and angles. I am sure you know you aim for your exit spot and if you are in a tripod with this somewhat "toward you" angle, the shot will take out the heart and lungs and again depending on height, etc. I have shot them broadside on the ground and passed thru, you know if you get too far back, you're into the gut which is much closer than alot think especially low.
