Will they continue to use rubs after their velvet is gone? Is a rub like a scrape in terms of a communication sight?
The "velvet rubs" are generally on brush, tall weeds, saplings, etc. The rubs everybody thinks of are generally made for different reasons. Primarily, they are used to mark a bucks territory, as a kind of sign post. A buck will rub his preorbital gland on the tree to deposit scent. This tells the other deer a lot about the social structure in the area, and exactly which buck made the rub, very much like a scrape. There are other reasons bucks rub as well, but to the point, the aggressive bark peeling rubs that we love to see have little to do with shedding velvet. Bucks will make these types of rubs all the way through the hunting/breeding season, basically until they drop their antlers.

Just to clear things up a bit. If you want to watch the video the easiest way is to go to Whitetails Inc. website sorry I'm not savvy enough to post a link here. If you want to see how and why the rub is setup view the That Time web video on the same site. Or you can read an in depth article on the subject in the Sept. issue of North American Whitetail.

Horizontal rubs work. My guess is its something new for the bucks to try. Most the time they are only rubbing vertically, maybe they just like the change. Who knows, but they seem to work well.

I too hope jawbreaker is still alive......

Some pretty amazing restraint laying off "Jawbreaker" in that video. Hopefully he survives and explodes next year.

I would've been shooting sticks after I emptied my quiver.
It was cool to see the whole thing unfold but I am totally with you !!!! I would have been running after him to shoot him a bunch more times.....

That horizontal rub post is a neat idea and JB seemed to be enjoying himself.
