Horton Hunter Supreme problems

I can not get my arrows to group tight. I have new Lighting Strike 2 bolts and 125gr 3 blade fixed broadheads. This started about 3 years ago. I am using a red dot and can sight in 1 arrow but the other 5 I have will be spread out in a 16" group at 20 yards. Each arrow will hit consistantly in the same spot on the target, so I can zero each arrow, individually, to bullseye so I feel it is an arrow prob not the bow. I can watch the arrows corkscrew from the bow to the target. I have aligned the blade to the vanes, between the vanes, left or right of vanes....no results that are noticable.

Any comments?

Are field points shooting ok?

I recommend you do inspect the limb bolts and cable, replace the string and leave the fixed blades behind.

Shorter arrows are much harder to stablize. I select 100grn. NAP Spitfires. If you decide to stay with fixed, choose Sonic or Muzzy 100grn. They seem to have less effect on arrow flight than most others.

Mechanicals will get you away from the tuning nightmares.

UPDATE: I took the 125gr BH off 3 arrows and put on 100gr field tips. after resighting I put all three 2X each in the 2" bullseye at 20 yrds.

So what is a good mech BH for a crossbow?

I have always had good luck with the wasp jackhammers or the grim reapers

I've always used 100 GR thunderheads fixed three blade. They always shot left and high. This year I tried 100 GR Magnus Stingers fixed four blade. I'm shooting a tighter group with the stingers then I am with the field tips now without making any sight adjustments. I'm shooting a Tenpoint stealth X2 with a three dot red dot scope.

one question about your arrows are your fletchings on straight, or do they have a slight twist to them?

years ago-when xbows featured 12" power strokes and 120 pound steel prods, fixed broadheads were required because the bows didn't have the power to reliably harvest game with mechanicals-which were not legal in most states or even available. Hunting deer sized game with modern xbows-there is NO reason-unless there are still some benighted states with archaic laws-NOT to use mechanicals

I think the best way to solve your grouping problem is to sell your Horton and buy an Excalibur. :D That's what I did. :shade: Actually I kept the Horton too.

My Excalibur will group well with Wasp Hammers, Muzzy 3 blade, and Slick Tricks. I did try another brand four blade last year, and it wouldn't group at all. Not all broadheads will perform the same with a particular bow.

If you do go with mechanicals, don't go with the 1.75" stuff. Stay with smaller more conventional cutting diamerers. I had some serious penetration issues with my Horton and Wasp Jackhammers 1.75".

The arrows are Horton Lightning Strike II's. Slight twist in fletching.
A very nice Lady named Michelle from Horton Mfg. e-mail me back and told me that Hortons bolts are designed to be used with 100gr BH. Thats why I pulled the 125's off and put the 100gr fieldtips on. I don't have any 100gr BH other than those on my arrows for my compound bow and I DO NOT want to disturb them! They are shooting 2" groups at 20 yrds! :D

Saturday I'm off to my local Sporting Goods shop to see what selection he has.

Thanks for all the great responses guys!

I'm no guru but my Horton Hunter also had trouble grouping. After several phone calls to Horton Mfg., I was told to try a straight fletched bolt. Had my local shop build up some Easton XX75 2219's with straight fletching. Life is good now. Sub 2" groups are no problem. Hope this helps.
