Can anybody give me input on their handheld releases? May want to give one a try but there are no dealers around.

I used them back in the middle 70's when Keith Stuart was MFG. them, at that time they were weak in the front where the pin goes through the front gate & would tear out the front of the release. The new one have not tried them.

Dealer for Hot Shot and have used the Vapor thumb button almost exclusively for the past 18 months and I have zero complaints. Came from a Scott thumb and I really like the single-stage trigger on the Hot Shot. Simple, shoots well. Hunted with it this past fall with great success and regularly put up great indoor scores.

Around 2014-15, I was interested in trying a hand held release, but didn't want to invest a lot in an experiment. So I bought a used Hot Shot (Vapor I believe) from the classifieds. Some may consider them to be comfortable, but I did not and it soon was creating "hot spots" on my fingers that were getting sore. While I liked the hand held process, I knew an upgrade was on my near horizon. I went with a Scott Exxus for well over a year, but they had an issue with misfires and mine eventually did so. From there I tried a couple Stans and found the SX3 was pretty much all that I was expecting. I didn't end up with a top shelf release because of status, but because it proved to be really excellent for the price......which i bought used on the classifieds as well. The Hot Shot was given to a friend in order for him to test out a hand held and I believe he eventually sold it.

Releases are like shoes, find the one that feels best for you. Some cheap and some expensive.
In the picture you will notice Terry is shooting a PSE original Citation four-wheeler, wide plastic wheels, steel cables, dacron string, springy rest and most likely X7 1914's (big shaft in the day). An original Hotshot with one adjustment screw. He shot a 1200 Vegas, perfect score. It's not the equipment. It's skill and determination. Then he repeated the performance at COBO Hall.
Sorry to hijack, carry on.

The first Hot shot I ever tried was slightly out of adjustment. I figured it out right after punching myself in the mouth. 😂 After adjusting it properly, it worked great for many years. Then I got a Scott caliper release and never looked back. Bill Scott made some great releases in his time here on earth.😉

I have one of the new ones when I first switched to a D Loop. Since I used to use the old Hotshot that kballer mentioned, I decided to try the new one and since I bought it at Vegas during the tournament, the price was half the cost of a new Carter.

It works like a Carter and is completely adjustable as a Carter but just not as smooth as a Carter on release. It is no where as rough on release as the China models though. I always felt that if you took the Hotshot apart and honed the pieces inside, it would feel just like a Carter. Does anyone remember when we used to do that with a Carter back in the day.

And anyone that says that Hotshot copied Carter, I always felt that Carter copied Failsafe by just putting a metal case on one. I had the first release made by Carter called the "Wilde Thing" and it was a perfect copy of the Failsafe. I also remember Stan getting so angry when Carter started copying his release. I still have a couple "Avenger" releases from when Stan tried to get back at Carter for stealing his release.
