Hypethetical situation.....You are elk hunting with your bow and have no side arm. You see a large black bear about 70 yds away and very quickly he sees you and comes charging straight at you. You DO NOT have a bear tag.

At what point do you shoot?

Whats wrong with the picture? I think if the three of them gang up on him with their clubs they might have a chance.

The only bear I had "charge" me was one I called in for my friend.....he waited till the bear was 6 yards from me to stop it with a "woof". I had my pistole pulled when the bear was at 40 yards and tried my best to hide completely behind my bow.:embara:

Ya all forget, a bear is almost blind he cant see you at 70 yards or even 20 yards unless you move or do somthing stupid like run. If he's running at you at 70 yards you had better be more worried at whats chasing him. Black bears can be bluffed, just yell and make alot of noise before he gets to close to you and he will leave. Do not let him any closer than 15 yards or you will have to shoot, if you startle him at this distance he will attack. If you shoot do not move, do not run ,he will attack what ever just hurt him. You can make him turn and leave by just shooting into a tree next to him, the noise will startle him and he will run. If you see cubs try to spot the sow and get the hxxl ot of there. No rules apply to females and the cubs. Rember they are a beutiful animal in the woods but unlike other prey these can bite back, just have a healthy respect for them and be aware of your surrondings and enjoy.

I shot video of a guy hunting black bear in Alaska. The bear walked down the beach directly towards us as we hid on the ground in the tall weeds. He didn't give the hunter a shot until he turned broadside at 4 yards. The bowhunter, in the intensity of it all, blew the shot. Real close

Black bear......Well, I'd definitely give it plenty of time by yelling and screaming to let it know that I wasn't intended to be lunch. In my experiences with blacks in the past, this should do it. If, for some reason all the yelling and screaming doesn't do it and he's still coming at me, I'd say somewhere between 20 and 30 yds I'd start shooting.

I dont really care how far it is from me. As long as the bears not sniffing my neck or leg i just wont move. If you dont move, nothing will happen most of the time. But if you start to get up and try to get away. That could trigger the bear to come after you as if you were food. Bears are more scared of you and will run away. But just remember that they are wild animals, and that blood thirsty button can get pushed at anytime.
