How do you carry your bow when backpacking?

Title says it all. I'm new bow to hunting and am planning on doing some backpacking while hunting. I'm wondering what my possibities are for carrying my bow while backpacking. I've seen someone using a bow sling on TV but am curious how well that works for longer trips. Is it easiest to just strap it to my pack?

I have only been hunting for a few years and I have just always carried my bow in my hand on my hikes in (usually switching hands multiple times on the walk in). I just ordered a custom sling from a guy here on AT that clips to my bow, I am going to try that this year. So I can have my hands free and my bow over my shoulder hanging along my side.

I use the Primos bow sling. Makes carrying the bow much easier during the first few miles of the hike, until we reach the area we are planning to hunt. If we do happen to encounter a critter before reaching our hunting area, the sling is very easy to remove and throw across the shoulders to enable a shot.

Are you hauling with a pack frame or a day pack?

Some day packs (eberlestock x2 and tenzing 2200) have built-in bow/rifle boots to carry your weapon on your pack. I have the 2200 and have used it for hauling both my rifle and my bow. Works great and saves your arms from getting tired hauling your bow in.

Backpacking long distance I have found it easiest to tie or strap it to your pack. On a pack trip hauling weight you may want both hands free to use trekking poles and you will get tired of carrying your bow real quick. Load your pack at home and mess around with some option till you find what works with your pack and bow combo.

When I am climbing up or hiking on the mountain in the dark, I strap mine to my back as outlined in the pic below.

Once it's daylight and hunting, then I just carry it in my hand so I'm ready at a moments notice. I used to use the Primos sling, but this works much better for me. You could get by with it while you are hunting, but I want to get to my bow a little faster.
