How do you guys store your hunting clothing?

Hey all! I’m going hunting this year for the first time in almost 20 years, largely just for the fun of going to camp and being in the woods. I need all new clothes, and I don’t want to spend a fortune on premium ScentLok and similarly priced clothes for the few times I’ll get out there this season. I was thrilled when my local Walmart had a newly created section of hunting stuff including cheap clothing, so I grabbed a pair of insulated bibs and a parka. Now that I have them, what do you guys suggest I do for storage and odor control?

I did recently purchase a Scent Crusher store tote bag so I thought as I acquire my clothing I can place them all in this bag with some of those wafers that smell like Earth, and then maybe stash the whole bag in the shed. What would you guys do with brand new clothing? Would you launder them in an anti scent detergent first? Is my bag plan a good idea? We do have both cats and dogs in the house, and I imagine I wouldn’t want to get those scents on my hunting clothes.

Thanks for the help!

I keep my clothes in plastic totes. In the garge with some bake soday at the bottoms. when hunt season nears I wash them in soda and unscented soap. Hang em to air dry. then back in the totes with some sort of brush familair to where I hunt. My area is full of red cedar. so I put some cuttings of that in with my clothes. I keep the totes outside on my porch. Also some fresh baking soda in bottom of totes. ONE THING NOT TO DO. When done hunting I wash clothes and put them in the totes. Do not leave any natural brush in with them for the Winter. I did that. Left some cedar in amoungst the clothes. Next fall mildew had formed on my clothes. took much washing to remove it!

I keep it in a plastic tote that has a rubber gasket around the rim for a seal (I get mine af Home Depot). And I wash mine with pure baking soda mixed with Tide Free and Clear or Dreft we use for my baby. I take a shower with unscented gentle Dove soap.

Thanks for the replies! So would a reasonable plan be to wash them in a scent free detergent with the UV blockers, then place them in totes, and then place the totes in my shed? Instead of brush, what about the waffles that smell like Earth? Is that stuff too artificial?

Thanks again for the help!

Perhaps I will try this. I use the wafers in a tote. I change in the bed of my truck at the site. Wash with dead down wind before the hunt, spray the scent neutralizer on me before I step off. Then hang a fresh water on my hat. And I never see deer. Perhaps that is the issue.

kept a broken upright freezer and store clothes on selves after washing in baking soda. I stuff 5gl paint strainer bags(about 25 cents each at walmart) with weeds, hay, cedar and other natural scents and stick them in with the clothes. Much easier to pick clothes out when stacked on shelves. I drilled a few 1/4 " holes through the back, on top and bottom, so there is some ventilation

Hey guys, thank you so much for the replies! I'm overwhelmed, and can't reply to everyone individually, but I appreciate everyone's reply!

As many of you have said, and I probably should have led off with this, I know wind and position are the most important things. After that, I'm going to launder my clothes in a no scent kind of detergent, and keep them either in my bag or a bin in the shed. I think in the shed is key, I don't want household odors or pet smell on my hunting duds. Baking soda seems to be popular too, should have figured that. But this has been a big help, thanks for the replies!

I have two large trash cans in the garage that all my hunting clothes are stored in. In the bottom of the trash cans I put cedar cuttings.....simple as that..

In my closet hung up. Why? Because my uncle who has killed more deer than even many TV hunters will sit in a stand while smoking a cigarette. He taught me if you are high enough then scent dont matter. 20+ feet in the air is where i live during hunting season.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies and help!

I saw cedar mentioned a few times. We use cedar shavings as cat litter, I wonder if those would work. We get an enormous bag for like $6 at Walmart.

I think I’m going to at least look at the Earth scented wafers. This seems the simplest and cleanest to me, as long as they are not artificial smelling. And if they are, then maybe the cedar and/or baking soda.

@PostalRandy23 - Thanks for the suggestion and info, but I will more likely be blind hunting or in a stand much lower than that. I’m too old to be climbing 20+ feet up trees ;-)

Thanks again everyone!
