You only need 4 strands for strength -- it is virtually impossible to get any sort of decent nock fit with less than 12 strands -- 14 strands would be appropriate.

I build all the recurve strings for the UC Berkeley Archery Team, using either BCY 8125 or Astro Flight. Here is what I use for BCY 8125...

Large groove nocks:
20 strands, 0.015" serving
18 strands, 0.018" serving
16 strands, 0.021" serving

Small groove nocks:
18 strands, 0.015" serving
16 strands, 0.018" serving
14 strands, 0.021" serving
