Is there a way of telling by the depth of string material from the spool, approximately how many strings one can build?!

A buddy asked me to make him strings today. Nothing like 4 days before the opener. But I am not sure I have enough material left? I don't want to promise something I can't deliver.

Depending on material and the bow, but generally from 1/8 lb spool I can usually get about 6 sets of strings

Assumming you're making full sets all one color you get 6-8 sets from 1/4lb spool on average. If doing 2 colors you just doubled it. I've gotten pretty good at judging if I can make it or not. I'm still wrong from time to time. My wife is very good at judging spools.
