I have been doing some research along with reading post on here. And I am wondering if I can preserve velvet myself, I hear of antler tanning solution. And also freeze drying, can I do this myself how do I freeze dry velvet? Thanks
I have a friend that has a caribou mount still in velvet. He said a couple days with needle and injecting it with fermeldahide (don't know the spelling) will do it. Don't know the exact procedure but he said he will never do it again.
The formaldehyde is the way we used but anything that will dry it up quick will probably work. Years ago a client shot a really old bull Moose that had this white banding in its velvet so we decided to try and preserve it. Man what a chore that was, two people with syringes and it took forever to get that old boy done but it did look really nice. I have never tried it since..RandyI have always used a water solution mixed with as much borax as it will take. Put the horns in the water completely submerged and then wait a couple of days. The borax will crystallize on the horns. Take it out and let dry. The borax will dry out the velvet and preserve the look. . .
I would try the alcohol/borax advice from a poster above. I think that might work even better. The goal is to dry out all the fluids in the velvet (has blood and veins running through it).
Good luck, Kelpy
