I was wondering if there is anybody out there that hunts with target color bows and not camo? Is there really any need for camo?

S9323,

I know a couple guys who hunt with a Mathews Rootbear target bow with camo limbs and another who hunts with a Kewi colored bow.
I have heard about other guys hunting with their target colored Hoyts among other brands too.
I have thought about hunting with my Gray Leopard Bowman as it looks like camo anyway but just stick to my old Mach 8 with Mossy Oak finish.
Movement is what catches a deer's attention more than anything.
Not the color of your bow.
Although, I believe, I would cover white limbs with a camo sleeve just to be safe. ;)

I did but limbs had covers and riser was camo taped. To get rid of the shinyness. If you get rid of the shinyness don't have to cover it up.
Because I remember the Hoyt defiant my dealer had. With that anodized camo they used. Got spotted a couple of times from sun reflecting off of it.

If your hunting out a tree may not matter as much but here it's all spot and stalk hunting.

I've used a Rootbeer Conquest 2 before, and had no problems. I did wrap a 3' strip of burlap around the riser (like wrapping a broken arm) with breaks between the sight, rest, and grip.

Although I have started bow hunting only a short time ago, I am convinced that what counts is reflections and the movement.

We are forced by law to use bright red jackets or vests during the hunt in groups.
The majority, if not all mammals cannot see red as we do. I am convinced that the contrast is what allows the benefits of camouflage not the colours themselves.

There are big differences in the sharpness of view for different animals. Also during the moose hunt, normally the moose will not recognize you unless you move very fast.

The feathers of my arrows are bright red, yellow and blue and the nocks as bright red or pink as I can get because I am far more interested in bow hunting than arrow hunting...

I killed my first dear years ago with an old round wheeled Cougar.....Gloss black. ;)

But then again, I killed an Elk (with a camo bow) with a tie die and Levi's on once too. ....he shouldnt have let me see him off the highway there. :D

If its a planned thing though....I'll take camo anyday.....why take a chance with shiney metal. ;)

Hunting with target colors

My first (AND 1 AND ONLY) deer was taken with my bright aqua Hoyt target bow at 25 yards. 40# - went clear through. Had on my lipstick and gold earrings. At the time, couldn't see what all the fuss was about. LOL

bow

I shot my best buck with a old red conquest.
Deer are color blind.
I dont worry about the shine of my bow, how many times has it been raining and you looked at the tree limbs and they shined!
The only time you really need a camo bow is when you want to look good or when you are hunting on land you are not allowed on :D :D

before my camo c3 with target stabs, and scope. I used my blackcherry c2 with scope and target. The only thing I change is arrows and tips. Never had a problem. I think the deer like the pretty colors :D

I use my red Scepter II for hunting and have no problem shooting deer with it yet. The deer don't seem to care what color the bow is that they got shot with. I also use a silver/chrome arc drop away rest and a silver overkill release, and none of these items have been a problem either. I shot 4 deer this year with this set up and one last year. I think to many people make to big of a deal about camo, just make sure you are in a good location and have the wind in your favor. Besides, taking a picture with you trophy animal and a pretty colored target bow looks really nice.

I went on a guided hunt this year. The guide almost had a fit when I took out my red and blue Scepter III and told him that was what I was hunting with. After the second day and a turkey and a deer later he didn't mind it a bit. :)

I don't think it matters too much, while no doubt contrast is more important than "color" I've been very close to deer with orange on, and until they seen me move it didn't bother them much at all. I'd also say having something reflect in the direct view of the animal is probaby going to bother them. However how many of us leave our optics at home because the lens might reflect to the animal.

Also I'd say both contrast and reflection are not what get you busted, it's movement that does. Having high contrast or something that reflects only increases the chance that a animal will catch your movement.

If a person was a real beliver in camo as a must, you'd have to use carbon arrows (AL ones are shiny) and your feathers/vanes would have to be black/green/brown.

I've seen a lot of guys go on and on about camo then go hunting with 4 bright bright arrows on their bow/hip.

The best reason IMO to buy a camo bow is simply resale value.

In the "old days" I would thoroughly wax the bow (recurve) and spray with floral spray paint. When paint rubbed off I just touched up with a spray here and there. I could restore it back to original finish with lacquer remover. This was ok for bows with epoxy finishes.
If one wanted try this, its still best to experiment on a small area.
