Here is a link to the video tutorial showing how to setup ArcGis Explorer with the basics for your Internet Scouting.
I didn't include the addition of the ESRI server or how to add other GIS data from sources like the National Forest GIS pages.

Just a heads up, you may end up punching your monitor. I have a bachelor's degree in GIS and although it is a very robust program, it can be extremely difficult to learn. Google maps with the "terrain" option on gives you about as good of topo as you're going to find for free.

The demo shows the clarity of the Topos you get from ESRI.
They are the best I have seen yet, same for the Sat images from ESRI. GE uses a patchwork of images, some with a dark green shadow over my areas of interest, making GE basically unusable.
I have heard the main ArcGis apps can be difficult but the free "Explorer" seems to be pretty easy to use.
