I will be hunting in Iowa for the 2018 shotgun season and probably a DIY public land hunt, zone 5. Has anyone had any experience or know what might be best Rathbun Lake, or Stephens Forest public land? I plan on driving out early and scouting different locations. I don't have the funds for a guided hunt, so i'm planning to take the public land, and deal with it. Any info. would be great. Thanks

Those are both good......it all gets pushed hard , but if you are in the right place....there is big deer there.
The river timber and Odessa are both good as well.

Personally I would go with the forest. The deeper you get in, the fewer people you will see. It is very rugged.
I have hunted it before. It is a rather large tract of land and easy to get turned around in if you don't carry a gps.
