I am sort of in the market for a new camcorder. I dont really want to spend the money for a professional camera, but I want something a little better then the same old Handycams. I saw the Cannon A1 Digital 8mm Videocamera on the net and thought it looked pretty nice, but how does it perform? How old is this model? How easy is it to edit? Thanks a lot!

A moderately priced "MiniDV" camcorder would better service you. It's better picture quality and most editing programs are set up for it.

Things to look for...

1. "Optical Zoom Power" - The bigger the better.
2. CCD's (color chips) The more (3) the better (as opposed to one) the better, but also much more expensive.
3. Image stabilization - "Optical" is better than "Electronic"

Thing to ignore...

1. "Digital Zoom Power" - Junk, junk, junk. The only thing it does is make the pixels bigger and "blockier".
